WTA roundup: Bertens, Sabalenka roll into St. Petersburg quarterfinals

[February 01, 2019]    Second-seeded Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands and No. 4 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus rolled into the quarterfinals Thursday in St. Petersburg, Russia.

 

Bertens dialed up 13 aces to defeat Germany's Ysaline Bonaventure 6-4, 6-2. Sabalenka needed just 70 minutes to dispatch Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck 6-1, 6-4.

All four top seeds advanced to the quarters, after No. 1 Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and No. 3 Daria Kasatkina of Russia advanced on Thursday.

Bertens will face Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who upset sixth-seeded Latvian Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 6-4. Sabalenka will play Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, a 7-5, 6-2 winner over Czech Tereza Martincova.

Thailand Open

Slovenia's Tamara Zidansek ended the run of qualifier Jennifer Brady, besting the American 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (9) in a match that lasted 2 hours, 20 minutes, to reach the quarterfinals in Hua Hin.

Zidansek will square off against Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic, a 7-6 (4), 7-5 winner over China's Yingying Duan.

Fifth-seeded Shuai Zhang of China had to retire in the first set of her match against countrywoman Yafan Wang. Zhang was down 4-1.

Wang will play Poland's Magda Linette in the quarterfinals. Linette needed 2 1/2 hours to rally past Romania's Monica Niculescu 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
