Cubs sign RHP Barnette to 1-year deal

[February 02, 2019]    The Chicago Cubs signed right-handed reliever Tony Barnette to a one-year deal with a club option for 2020 on Friday.

Barnette, 35, was 2-0 with a 2.39 ERA in 22 relief appearances with the Texas Rangers last season. He limited opposing hitters to a .196 batting average (19-for-97) and posted 26 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings.

In 125 career appearances, Barnette is 11-4 with a 3.50 ERA. He stands to be the first Alaska native to play for the Cubs.

Chicago also announced that left-hander Ian Clarkin cleared waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Iowa.
