Students of Ag in the Classroom learn all about Sheep

 

[February 06, 2019]   During the month of January, Amy Hyde from the U of I Extension and Ag in the Classroom, was teaching Logan County students (Kindergarten – Fifth grade) about Sheep and Wool.

Students learned that there are three things we get from sheep; wool used for clothing, carpet, felt, upholstery, etc.

Meat – lamb is from a sheep that is less than one year old and mutton is the meat from a sheep that is over one year of age.

Lanolin which is used in making lotions, soaps and many cosmetics.

Students learned the many steps of how sheep are sheared and the final product of how wool is spun into yarn. The 3rd – 5th grade students had a fun activity with a throwback of string (yarn) tricks.

The Logan County Ag in the Classroom program is generously sponsored by the Agricultural Education Partnership Logan, Menard and Sangamon County and U of I Extension through donations from individuals, businesses and Farm Bureau.
