NHL roundup: Stars snap Blues' winning streak

[February 22, 2019] Jamie Benn recorded his second two-goal game of the season, and the Dallas Stars ended the visiting St. Louis Blues' franchise-record, 11-game winning streak with a 5-2 decision Thursday.

The Blues had not dropped a game since a 4-3 loss at Los Angeles on Jan. 21.

Radek Faksa and Tyler Seguin each added a goal and an assist for the Stars, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Alexander Radulov also scored for Dallas, which got two assists from Esa Lindell. Stars goalie Anton Khudobin made 43 saves to win for the second time in his past seven games.

Ryan O'Reilly had a goal and an assist for St. Louis, which also got a goal from Vladimir Tarasenko. Blues goalie Jordan Binnington made 20 saves but saw his nine-game winning streak end.

Lightning 2, Sabres 1 (SO)

Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov scored in a shootout to lead host Tampa Bay past Buffalo, the Lightning's eighth straight win.

Kucherov made history in the second period when he buried his 30th goal for his 100th point, making him the first Lightning player with multiple 100-point seasons. The Russian winger is the first NHL player to record 100 points (30 goals, NHL-best 70 assists) in 62 games or fewer since Mario Lemieux accomplished it in 61 games in the 1996-97 season.

Rasmus Dahlin scored a goal for the Sabres, who lost their fourth straight and dropped three of the four meetings in the season series with Tampa Bay.

Sharks 4, Penguins 0

Martin Jones made 26 saves, Tomas Hertl scored twice, and San Jose rode its special teams to a win at Pittsburgh.

Hertl's goals came on power plays, and Evander Kane scored short-handed. Brent Burns had a power-play goal and two assists. Kevin Labanc also had two assists.

Jones, who picked up his 29th win, earned his 21st career shutout -- first against the Penguins -- and second this season. San Jose, which was kicking off a four-game road trip, is 8-1-1 in its past 10 games. Casey DeSmith made 29 saves for Pittsburgh, which had won four of its previous five.

Canadiens 5, Flyers 1

Brendan Gallagher scored his first career NHL hat trick to lead Montreal past visiting Philadelphia.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Tomas Tatar also scored for Canadiens, who improved to 8-1-2 in their past 11 home games. Carey Price saved 29 of 30 shots for his 25th victory of the season.

Michael Raffl scored 10:23 into the third period for Philadelphia's lone goal of the game. For the second game in a row, goalie Carter Hart was pulled in the first period after allowing three goals on nine shots.

Wild 4, Rangers 1

Zach Parise scored a goal and added an assist as Minnesota snapped a five-game losing streak with a victory at New York.

Jared Spurgeon, Mikael Granlund and Jordan Greenway also scored for the Wild, and Eric Staal and Ryan Donato each had two assists. The Wild had been shut out in their previous two games and won for just the second time (2-7-3) in 11 games since the All-Star break. Devan Dubnyk made 33 saves.

Pavel Buchnevich scored the lone goal for the Rangers, and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 31 of 34 shots.

Predators 2, Kings 1

Roman Josi had a goal with an assist to help Nashville move into first place in the Central Division thanks to a home victory over Los Angeles.

Pekka Rinne made several key saves and 28 total for the Predators, who now sit one point ahead of the slumping Winnipeg Jets for the Central lead. Kyle Turris also scored for Nashville, which has won three of four following an 0-2-1 slide.

The Kings, who got a goal from Michael Amadio, matched a season high with their sixth straight defeat.

Cory Schneider made 30 saves to record his 25th career shutout as New Jersey skated to a victory over Ottawa in Newark, N.J.

Miles Wood collected a goal and an assist before exiting late in the second period with an undisclosed injury. Travis Zajac and Steven Santini also scored, and Kurtis Gabriel recorded his first career NHL goal for the Devils, who have won three of their past four.

The NHL-worst Senators took a ninth loss in their past 12 contests.

Hurricanes 4, Panthers 3

Justin Williams scored two goals -- including one that hit him in the face -- to help Carolina rally for a win at Sunrise, Fla.

Williams, who also had an assist, left the ice bleeding after he scored Carolina's first goal -- off his right cheekbone. He quickly returned with gauze in his nose and then scored Carolina's fourth goal, giving the Hurricanes a 4-3 lead with 17:45 left in the third.

The Panthers got three straight second-period goals in a span of 4:15, from Evgenii Dadonov, Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau. That gave Florida a 3-2 lead, but Carolina rallied with two third-period goals, from Justin Faulk and Williams. Nino Niederreiter scored Carolina's other goal.

Capitals 3, Maple Leafs 2

Tom Wilson scored a short-handed goal and added an assist to help Washington prevail at Toronto.

Alex Ovechkin and Brett Connolly also scored one goal each, and Lars Eller added two assists for the Capitals, who are 3-2-0 during their six-game road trip. Washington's Braden Holtby stopped 40 shots.

Andreas Johnsson and John Tavares scored for the Maple Leafs, who have lost three in a row. Frederik Andersen made 25 saves.

Coyotes 3, Canucks 2 (OT)

Alex Galchenyuk scored 1:54 into overtime to lead visiting Arizona past Vancouver.

Galchenyuk scored on a fake wraparound as he went one way behind the net and backtracked and tucked the puck in. He also had an assist as the Coyotes posted their fifth win in the past seven games. Jakob Chychrun and Lawson Crouse added goals for the Coyotes.

Bo Horvat and Adam Gaudette tallied for the Canucks, and Antoine Roussel assisted on both goals. Vancouver lost for the fourth time in its past five outings.

Oilers 4, Islanders 3 (OT)

Connor McDavid scored the winner to cap a two-point game, and Leon Draisaitl also notched one goal and one assist as host Edmonton snapped a five-game losing skid with an overtime victory against New York.

McDavid converted a backhand shot 82 seconds into the extra frame, a goal set up by Draisaitl. Sam Gagner and Oscar Klefbom also scored, and Oilers goalie Mikko Koskinen stopped 20 shots.

Brock Nelson, Anders Lee and Cal Clutterbuck tallied for New York, which lost for the second night in a row. Robin Lehner made 37 saves.
