On Friday evening the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow was definitely in downtown Lincoln. With it being a warm August night kids were taking advantage of a wide variety of water features at Third Friday Downtown Lincoln. In addition to the inflatables that all the kids enjoyed, the Lincoln Fire Department provided a geyser of water spraying into the street. As the sun fell lower in the sky, a rainbow formed, making the evening all the more magical for everyone.

Claire Coogan, sister to the late Caleb Coogan, snips a ribbon on a new playground built in young Caleb's memory in Mount Pulaski. The playground was dedicated and opened to all children in the community on Sunday, August 19th. Afterward, Calebs parents J.C. and Joyce join Claire in admiring the memorial sign at the playground. Caleb died in September 2017 the result of an off-road vehicle accident. On Sunday, J.C. Coogan noted, “Everybody out here has helped us to heal. Our little community, with the loss of Micah Wakeman, Evan Connor and Caleb Coogan, they’ve not stopped giving. You people have not stopped. A person can run out of money, but you people’s souls have not run out of goodness."

The Logan County Arts membership was challenged by its president, Moses Pinkerton, to come up with some artistic paintings to cover the windows on the north side of the Lincoln Art Institute in downtown Lincoln. They rose to the occasion of creating some beautiful pieces that turned the old boarded windows into a framework for outdoor art.

It has been a busy summer for Hartem volleyball standout Anna Hayes. She made a trip to Memphis, Tennessee back in May with her mom, Jennifer, just as the summer was beginning to kick in. While a stop at Graceland was a given for these Elvis fans, a visit to the University of Memphis was on their agenda as well. What transpired out of that visit to Memphis is something that is off the charts impressive.

At the next meeting of the Lincoln City Council, to be held as a voting session on Tuesday, September 4th, aldermen will be asked to vote to approve returning the billing of residential trash services to Area Disposal. Area Disposal was on hand at this week’s Committee of the Whole to voice they are willing to take the trash billing back, and will return to quarterly billing starting in October if the city votes accordingly. Alderman Tracy Welch said this was the best solution in order to relieve some of the pressure on the City Clerk's Office. City Clerk Peggy Bateman said the September billing will still be for sewerage and trash and will go out five days late, as she will wait to see how the council votes. If the council approves the change, a letter of explanation will go out in the September billing on September 5th. Bateman said because the city would delay the billing, it will also push the payment due date back from the 20th of the month to the 25th ONE TIME ONLY for September.

This week the Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society officially said goodbye to two very important volunteers - Bill and Diane Detmers. The couple, while from Logan County, live in Normal, and for the past 16 years have made regular trips to Lincoln to serve at the LCG&HS Center on Chicago Street. This week, Bill estimated that he has driven a total of about 64,000 miles over the last 16 years to help out at the center.

The LCG&HS hosted a special 'retirement' reception for the couple this week and presented the two with a certificate of appreciation for their contribution to the Society.
