Last Friday evening at the Peoria Chiefs game, Logan County Veterans Assistance Commission director Dan Benedict was honored as the Chiefs "Veteran of the Day." Benedict was acknowledged for his "23 years of meritorious service in the Air Force" as well as his roll in at the local VAC over the last two years, working hard to serve the needs of our local veterans.

Benedict received a certificate of appreciation and enjoyed sharing that with his wife Julie and two daughters who attended the game with him.

The Mount Pulaski Bruins won the 2018 Logan County Baseball Tournament on Saturday by defeating the Carroll Catholic/Zion Lutheran-Lincoln/New Holland-Middletown/Zion Lutheran-Mount Pulaski Crusaders 5-2 in the semifinals and then downing the Chester East-Lincoln Panthers 9-3 in the championship game.

At this week's voting meeting of the Lincoln City Council, aldermen approved a request from the Lincoln Rotary Club to initiate a "Hometown Hero" banner project in the downtown area. The club plans to acknowledge active duty service men and women, veterans and deceased veterans. The individual banners will feature a photo of the person with their name and military branch and other pertinent information.

The request was heard by aldermen last week at the Committee of the Whole when it was presented to them by Rotary President Kirby Rodgers along with Rotary member Carrie Pethy.

The Rotary plans to start the project with banners around the downtown square and may seek to expand it into other parts of town depending on the need.

The Illinois 4-H Foundation annually recognizes 4-H volunteers for exemplary service to the Illinois 4-H program. This year, 67 new members were inducted into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame during a celebration on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. From Logan County, John and Annie Coers were inducted into the Hall of Fame. The Coers are long-time leaders of the Hollander 4-H Club.

The Lincoln Junior High School Trojans softball team improved their overall season record to 17-6 with a regional quarterfinal victory over Riverton Wednesday afternoon at Ralph Gale Field. The Trojans downed Riverton by a score of 10-0 behind a no-hitter from pitcher Cara Farnam.

September 8

The "big hollow tree" in Kickapoo Creek Park in Lincoln got a major pruning recently. The tree which is a park landmark is near and dear to the hearts of many, and because of this, every effort is being made to save the aging tree that is hollow from the ground up. It is hoped that the pruning will relieve the stress on the structure of the tree, and that it will go ahead and branch out again next spring. However, if it doesn't, park superintendent Joe Funk said the tree will still remain because it is a favorite of park visitors.

Angie Sandel stands front and center among the charter members of the Faith Lutheran Church in Lincoln. This past Sunday the church hosted a large 50th anniversary celebration. At the end of the day, the charter members of the church who were present for the event were asked for a photo to commemorate the day. Angie is the oldest, first-generation member of the church. She was surrounded by other charter members, who according to Gail Apel Sasse were mostly second-generation members, meaning they were children or young adults when the church was formed and moved their membership to Faith from Zion Lutheran Church with their parents.
