Give Abraham Lincoln a helping hand
Orientation for new volunteers at Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum begins February 5
 

[January 09, 2019]    Anyone who wants to help tell the world about America’s greatest president will get a chance when the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum welcomes new volunteers. An information session on Tuesday, Feb. 5, will spell out how to join the team that greets visitors, assists at events, helps researchers and much more.

The one-hour session begins at 5:30 p.m. in the presidential library’s classroom (112 N. Sixth St., Springfield). Learn about the volunteer opportunities available and what you need to know about the library and museum.

Volunteers will be asked to attend three additional training sessions on Thursdays: Feb. 21, Feb. 28 and March 7. Each session starts at 5:30 p.m. and lasts approximately three hours.

Volunteers contribute an average of 40,000 hours of service each year to the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, making the experience better for those who visit the hugely popular institution.

The presidential library and museum uses a combination of rigorous scholarship and high-tech showmanship to immerse visitors in the life and times of Abraham Lincoln.

Visitors can see ghosts come to life on stage, watch TV coverage of the 1860 presidential election, roam through the Lincoln White House, experience booming cannons in a Civil War battle and come face to face with priceless original Lincoln artifacts.

The library holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photographs, artifacts and art, as well as some 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history.
