On Friday evening, Dr. David Gerlach, President of Lincoln College, and a few other representatives of the college, presented Alexander "Sandy" MacKinnon with a special plaque. This plaque serves to honor MacKinnon's history as an alumnus of the school (class of 1960), his successful career as a business owner, and his continued support through generous donations to the college since his graduation. As Lincoln College continues to expand their business education programs, the school of business is being renamed as the MacKinnon School of Business."

On Saturday morning, this large group gathered at the Fitness Track at the Oasis Senior Center in Lincoln for what will hopefully be the first of many Alzheimer's awareness walks. The early morning event included guest speakers and a Zumba warm-up before everyone took to the track. Participants did laps around the track in honor or in memory of those who are now, or have suffered from this disease often associated with aging.

Friends and family remember young Kennedy Freese in candle light vigil

A beautiful young life was mourned by candle light vigil on Monday evening. A tragic single vehicle accident on a county road near Hartsburg claimed the life of 17 year old Kennedy Freese on Saturday morning.

Friends and family filled Latham Park, downtown Lincoln starting at 7 p.m. Closing out the evening, as music played friends brought their candles forward to place under a photo of their friend.

Thursday evening Collision Concepts in Lincoln and Lincoln Daily News partnered to host a Pink Pumpkin Fundraiser Auction. The staff and organizers of this event were completely overwhelmed by the generosity of the bidders and the dollars that were brought in through the auction of 51 items, all donated by local businesses, organizations and individuals. We thank one and all for the role they played in helping us to raise money for the Relay for Life of Logan County!

At the beginning of the night, Jim addressed the crowd expressing appreciation for their attendance, urging them to loosen their purse strings, and most of all, encouraging the guests to have a good time.

Local auctioneer Mike Maske is joined by Logan County Fair royalty (left to right) Little Miss Kylee Fulk, Junior Miss Julia Collins, and Logan County Fair Queen Molly Schempp on Thursday night at the Pink Pumpkin Auction. Maske did a tremendous job racking up those high bids, with assistance from the local royalty who served as the team of "Vanna's" for the night.

Local auctioneer Mike Maske stands in front of the long line of tables with pink pumpkin auction items on display Thursday evening. The auction was a fundraiser for Relay for Life of Logan County hosted by Collision Concepts and Lincoln Daily News. At the end of the night the 51 items auctioned off brought in more than $6,000 to be earmarked for breast cancer research and support.

October 9

On Sunday afternoon, dozens of people, many of them children gathered on Broadway Street in downtown Lincoln to enjoy the sights and sounds of a large collection of fire trucks. The trucks were part of the Fifth Annual Fire Truck Parade and Truck Show hosted by the Logan County Fire Fighters Association. The collection of trucks included vehicles from throughout the county.

In addition to getting to see the vehicles, children were given gifts such as coloring books and fireman hats.

October 10

Chris Graue, representing the Lincoln Pigs & Swigs Committee and Graue Chevrolet hands over a donation to Lincoln D.A.R.E. Officer Christy Fruge' to assist in paying for a new grill for the program as well as for the police department.

Graue said that when Fruge' called he was considering contacting the police chief to see what might be needed for the new station on Fifth Street. He said talking about the grill with Fruge' made him realize that this was the answer to his question. Graue also made a donation on behalf of the Graue Chevrolet dealership and a donation was also made by the Lincoln Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership.

October 12

Lincoln Heritage Museum Director Anne Moseley examines a deteriorating flag owned by the museum. The flag was handmade in 1860 by the women of Middletown. After making the flag, the women carried it in a parade for a rally held in Springfield honoring presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln. The women were thrilled and honored when the flag was draped around Lincoln's shoulders as he addressed the crowd.

Moseley has announced that the flag is in need of restoration that will cost between $17,000 and $20,000 dollars. To help raise the funds, schools throughout the county are holding a "Save the Flag Penny Drive." Kids are encouraged to bring their pennies to school for the fundraiser. Donations of pennies will be taken at local schools through November 8th.
