WTA roundup: Kvitova rolls, Sharapova exits with injury

[January 31, 2019]    Top seed Petra Kvitova held off former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 7-6 (3) in her opening match at the St. Petersburg Open in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Wednesday.

 

Russia's Maria Sharapova, unseeded, was forced to retire with a right shoulder injury before her match against third-seeded countrymate Daria Kasatkina.

Kvitova, of the Czech Republic, will play No. 8 seed Donna Vekic of Croatia in the quarterfinals. Vekic beat lucky loser Veronika Kudermetova of Russia 6-4, 6-3 in the night's final match.

In other action, Russia's Vera Zvonareva stunned fifth-seeded Julia Goerges of Germany 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova knocked off Great Britain's Katie Boulter 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.

Thailand Open

Top-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain is into the quarterfinals after a 6-3, 7-5 win over Germany's Mona Barthel in Hua Hin.

Muguruza trailed 0-4 in the second set before rallying to seal the match.

In other action, No. 4 seed Saisai Zheng of China cruised past Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2, 6-4; No. 6 seed Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia heated up late in beating Ukraine's Kateryna Kozlova 7-6 (0), 6-1; and No. 8 seed Dayana Yastremska, also from Ukraine, beat China's Peng Shuai 6-1, 6-4.
