Wieters' fourth homer of the season followed a
two-out single rolled by Kolten Wong to Padres first baseman
Eric Hosmer. Wieters connected on a 1-2 slider from left-handed
reliever Brad Wieck (0-1).
Right-hander Carlos Martinez (2-0) allowed a hit and a walk with
four strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to get
the win. Dominic Leone picked up his first save.
The Padres built a 3-0 lead in the first five innings against
Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas on a two-run homer by Manny
Machado and the speed of rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.
Machado's home run followed a one-out, opposite-field double by
Hosmer in the first. The home run was Machado's 10th in the last
15 games and his 20th of the season -- giving the Padres three
players with 20 homers before the All-Star break for the first
time in franchise history.
Tatis singled with two out in the fifth and scored from first on
Hosmer's single to right-center. Tatis raced home ahead of the
relay from right fielder Jose Martinez through second baseman
Tommy Edman to score his 26th run in the last 20 games.
But the Cardinals tied the game with two runs in the sixth and
an unearned run in the top of the eighth.
St. Louis loaded the bases in the sixth on a pair of walks
around a single by Paul DeJong against Padres starter Joey
Lucchesi. Martinez and DeJong scored on Yairo Munoz's two-out
single off reliever Luis Perdomo.
Paul Goldschmidt topped a infield single to third with one out
in the eighth against Craig Stammen and moved to second on
Machado's throwing error. With one out, Tyler O'Neill singled to
right. Goldschmidt initially stopped at third, then scored when
Franmil Reyes bobbled the ball.
Lucchesi allowed two runs on four hits and three walks with six
strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Mikolas gave up three runs on eight
hits and no walks with four strikeouts in six innings. Each
starter threw 87 pitches.
