[July 05, 2019]    The Montreal Canadiens signed free-agent defenseman Ben Chiarot to a three-year, $10.5 million contract on Thursday.

Chiarot, 28, set a number of career highs with the Winnipeg Jets last season, scoring five goals and 15 assists over 78 games and ranking second on the team with 139 blocked shots. He appeared in six playoff games without a point.

A fourth-round selection by the then-Atlanta Thrashers in 2009, Chiarot has 12 goals and 52 assists in 305 career games over six seasons, all with the Jets.

"(Chiarot) is a very reliable defenseman and a solid player who will fill a need for our club," Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said in a release. "He is the type of player who can play some big minutes and be used in different situations. We are convinced he will improve our defensive group."
