Matt Wieters and Dexter Fowler hit home runs
for the Cardinals, who took two of three games in the
interleague series. Four St. Louis relievers combined for 5 2/3
scoreless innings.
J.P. Crawford and Tim Beckham homered for the Mariners, who lost
for the sixth time in seven games.
Edman's two-run single in the seventh inning gave the Cardinals
their first lead and gave Daniel Ponce de Leon (1-0) his first
major league win in his 16th appearance.
Ponce de Leon tossed 2 2/3 hitless innings, and Carlos Martinez
pitched the ninth for his third save.
On Wednesday, Edman's three-run homer broke a ninth-inning tie
in St. Louis' 5-2 win.
The Mariners opened the scoring in the first inning Thursday as
Crawford went deep to right-center field off Michael Wacha. It
was Crawford's fourth home run of the season.
The Cardinals tied it with one out in the third on Wieters' solo
shot, his fifth, off Tommy Milone.
The Mariners regained the lead in the bottom of the inning,
scoring twice. Dee Gordon led off by grounding a single into
right field, moved to third on Mallex Smith's double and scored
on Crawford's groundout. With two outs, Daniel Vogelbach lined a
run-scoring single to right to make it 3-1.
The Cardinals tied it in the fourth as Tyler O'Neill singled
with one out and scored on Fowler's two-run shot, his ninth, to
left-center field.
The Mariners responded in the bottom of the inning as Beckham
led off with his 14th home run of the season, to left-center
field, giving Seattle a 4-3 lead.
It stayed that way until the seventh, when the Cardinals scored
twice to take a 5-4 lead.
Fowler led off with a walk, and Harrison Bader grounded a
one-out single to left, sending Fowler to second and ending
Milone's afternoon. Reliever Matt Festa walked Wieters to load
the bases, and Edman grounded a two-run single to right.
Milone (1-3) went 5 1/3 innings and was charged with all five
Cardinals runs. He allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out
four.
Wacha didn't factor into the decision, allowing four runs on six
hits in 3 1/3 innings, with two walks and no strikeouts.
