Mill on Route 66 presents Capone and Cannoli this Saturday
 

[July 10, 2019]  LINCOLN - Attendees at The Mill Museum on 66 in Lincoln, Illinois this Saturday, July 13 will be able to attend three events in succession or pick and choose from the options to participate in. The festivities begin at 2:30pm. The Mill is open during the regular hours of 1pm – 4pm as well.

The Mill is honored to have Windy City Warrior, David Clark as the featured presenter. From 2:30pm-3:30pm at The Mill Museum on 66 on Saturday, July 13, is the re-dedication of the Mill Library and Al Capone presentation by the well-known author, presenter and tour guide, David Clark, with Q&A afterwards. The Capone & Coonhound Johnny connection to Lincoln & Logan County will also be discussed. In addition, Clark will be signing his books that will be for sale at the event. Suggested donation: $6.60 for The Mill. Pay as you go.

The presentation includes the dedication of The David G. Clark Mill Library, with the presentation of “Al Capone & the Route 66 Connection” to follow by David G. Clark. David is a Route 66, Chicago and Al Capone historian. He conducts Windy City Road Warrior tours from his home base of Chicago. David has been prolific and generous in his donation of Route 66 magazines and books to The Mill since it opened as a museum in 2017. On display as part of the library is a recently acquired collection of rare materials from the Pig Hip Restaurant & Museum (special thanks to Jude Harms and family). Also, on display will be a newly uncovered rare Bob Waldmire document and a collection of materials from Lincoln native, astronaut Scott Altman.

Then from 4pm-5pm - Tour of Route 66 in Lincoln - Caravan Style. With Geoff Ladd of The Mill, David Clark & Sherry Meyer of InSites To Go, an Illinois-based group tours agency. Suggested donation: $6.60 for The Mill (includes free cold bottled water). Learn about the Route 66 attractions in Lincoln, including some that are lesser known.

The grand finale is at 5:15 pm with dinner at Sorrento's Pizzeria - Al Capone’s Smokin’ Cannoli Special - a medium 2-topping pizza, four Capone’s Cigars (pretzel stix), and two cannoli will be the evening special with a portion of the total ticket going to the Mill.

 

Sam Sorrento’s Pizzeria is celebrating 50 years in business in Lincoln, Illinois this year. The restaurant’s new location at 614 Broadway Street in Historic Downtown Lincoln. Owners Jim and Lisa Drew and Lisa’s son Tony Curcuru invite the public to the restaurant’s new location at 614 Broadway Street in Historic Downtown Lincoln for the special meal to conclude the day’s events. The meal will feature cannoli from the Tony Cannoli Company.

The events are part of the ongoing Mill 90th Anniversary Celebration all this year. The Mill opened as a sandwich stand on original Route 66 in Lincoln back in 1929. It later became favorite and somewhat wild and crazy bar and restaurant after WW2, and then closed in 1994. The Mill has now been restored and is in its third year as a Route 66 and Lincoln/ Logan County museum, with artifacts from The Mill, The Tropics, The Pig Hip and much more. On sale at the event will be the very special limited-edition Mill 90th Anniversary t-shirts and women’s v-neck shirts for $25 each (special thanks to Route 66 T-Shirt expert Marie Fiedler). All other in stock Mill apparel will be on sale for 20% off on Saturday as well.

The Mill Museum on 66 is restored and now open, but we are still in need of donations to cover basic expenses such as insurance and utilities. The facility is owned and operated by the 501c3 non-profit organization, the Route 66 Heritage Foundation of Logan County. All donations are tax-deductible.
