Just as he was heating up, San
Francisco Giants third baseman Evan Longoria wound up on the 10-day
injured list Monday due to plantar fasciitis in his left foot.
The 33-year-old is batting .241 with 13 home runs and 39 RBIs in 83
games this season. In nine games in July, Longoria hit safely in
eight of them, batting .400 with six homers and 12 RBIs.
Right-hander Ray Black was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento in a
corresponding move and pitched one scoreless inning in the opening
game of a doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies. Black was sent
down after Game 1 and right-hander Dereck Rodriguez was recalled to
start the nightcap.
--The Boston Red Sox designated veteran infielder Eduardo Nunez for
assignment.
The 32-year-old Nunez is batting just .228 with two homers and 20
RBIs in 60 games this season. Nunez was a World Series hero last
fall when he hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer to help Boston beat
the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1. The Red Sox won the series in
five games.
Nunez has a .276 career average with 58 homers and 309 RBIs in 856
games over 10 seasons with the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins,
San Francisco Giants and Red Sox. Boston also optioned Hector
Velazquez to Pawtucket and recalled fellow right-hander Ryan Weber
and first baseman/outfielder Sam Travis from the same Triple-A
affiliate.
--The New York Mets will place right-hander Zack Wheeler on the
10-day injured list due to shoulder fatigue, Newsday reported.
The 29-year-old is 6-6 with a 4.69 ERA in 19 starts this year and
had been linked to trade talks with the New York Yankees and Boston
Red Sox.
Wheeler was scheduled to start Tuesday's series opener in Minnesota
but will be replaced by left-hander Steven Matz. Wheeler has not
pitched since July 7, when he allowed six runs on eight hits in five
innings in an 8-3 loss to Philadelphia.
--Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Chris Taylor will miss a
significant amount of time after he was diagnosed with a fractured
left forearm.
The Dodgers recalled Matt Beaty from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill
the vacant roster spot. No timetable for Taylor's return was
revealed.
Los Angeles also designated left-hander Zac Rosscup for assignment
and added right-hander Casey Sadler to the major league roster.

--The Detroit Tigers recalled former All-Star closer Trevor
Rosenthal from Triple-A Toledo.
The 29-year-old Rosenthal signed a minor league deal with the Tigers
last month. He struggled at Toledo with a 10.13 ERA in six
appearances.
Rosenthal was an All-Star in 2015 and saved 93 games over a
two-season span (2014-15) with the St. Louis Cardinals before
ineffectiveness and Tommy John surgery derailed his career. He began
this season with the Washington Nationals before being released
after allowing 16 runs in just six 6 1/3 innings over 12
appearances. He walked 15 and struck out just five.
--The Seattle Mariners activated right-hander Sam Tuivailala from
the 60-day injured list now that he is recovered after nearly a year
away because of a torn right Achilles.
Tuivailala, 26, pitched in five games for the Mariners last season
after he was acquired in a late-July trade from the St. Louis
Cardinals and posted a 1.69 ERA.
The move fills one of two vacant roster spots for the Mariners after
right-handers Parker Markel and David McKay were optioned to
Triple-A Tacoma. The other roster spot is expected to be filled
Tuesday.
--Catcher Anthony Bemboom was designated for assignment by the Tampa
Bay Rays, then traded to the Los Angeles Angels for cash
considerations.
Bemboom, 29, was 2-for-5 with a double in three games for the Rays
earlier this season but found himself on the 60-day injured list
with a left knee sprain. Now that he has recovered from the injury,
the Rays designated him for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man
roster.
The Rays are set at catcher after acquiring Travis d'Arnaud from the
Los Angeles Dodgers in May, days before Bemboom was placed on the
injured list. They also have Mike Zunino.
