David Bote went 4-for-4 with a double,
a homer and a career-high seven RBIs, and the Chicago Cubs held on
for a 9-8 win over the visiting Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.
Bote drilled a three-run homer, a three-run double and a run-scoring
single as the Cubs won their third consecutive game. Willson
Contreras and Anthony Rizzo drove in one run apiece for Chicago.
David Dahl finished with three RBIs and Nolan Arenado notched two
RBIs for the Rockies. Colorado has dropped back-to-back games after
winning its previous eight in a row.
Cubs right-hander Brandon Kintzler (2-0) earned the victory with
two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief. He was one of six
relievers to back up starter Yu Darvish, who gave up three runs (two
earned) in 5 1/3 innings.
Rockies right-hander German Marquez (6-3) took the loss,
surrendering eight runs in 5 1/3 innings.
The Cubs broke a scoreless tie in the fifth to pull ahead 3-0.
Contreras started the outburst with a two-out single to right field.
Jason Heyward followed with an opposite-field single that put
runners on first and second base for Bote, who launched a 410-shot
to left-center field for his seventh homer.
The Rockies answered with three runs in the sixth to even the score.
Arenado drove in Colorado's first run with a single to left that
scored Trevor Story. A throwing error by first baseman Rizzo allowed
Dahl to score the second run. Ryan McMahon then made it 3-all with
an RBI single to left.
The Cubs battled back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to
go up 8-3.

Rizzo made up for his error with a go-ahead single to right, driving
in Kyle Schwarber. Three batters later, Contreras made it 5-3 when
he was hit by a pitch from Marquez with the bases loaded.
Bote extended the lead to 8-3 with a three-run double off the left
field wall against Rockies reliever Chris Rusin.
The Rockies plated four runs in the seventh to pull within 8-7.
After Story hit an RBI single to left, Dahl followed with a two-run
triple to deep center. Arenado added a sacrifice fly to trim the
deficit to one.
Bote came through again with an RBI single in the eighth to make it
9-7.
Dahl, who went 3-for-5 and scored two runs, delivered an RBI single
in the ninth to cut Colorado's deficit to 9-8. However, Cubs
reliever Steve Cishek struck out McMahon for the final out to secure
his sixth save of the season.
