[June 15, 2019]
On the first of the June, nearly two dozen families came to Hickory
Lane Campground in Atlanta for the Annual Nathan Turner Memorial
Fishing Derby.
This year, the weather was bright and sunny, and it was a beautiful
morning for outdoor activity - even if the fish were a little slow
to wake up.
The Turner family and the Lincoln City Police D.A.R.E program
sponsor the Fishing Derby hosted every year by the Hickory Lane, and
it is free to families with school aged children and their parents
looking to catch some fish and have a good time together.
Members of the Turner family and officers with the D.A.R.E program
are on hand every year to assist.
The pond gets stocked each year in the days leading up to the event.
Lunch was also provided for the participants, and their families,
with prizes awarded at the end.

The Derby is held in honor and memory of Nathan Turner, a former Lincoln City
Council alderman and resident of Lincoln, who was an avid fisherman and
outdoorsman. He grew up attending fishing derbies and passed his love of fishing
and the outdoors on to others. His family supports the fishing derby to keep his
memory alive and spread his love of fishing and the outdoors. Nathan is survived
by his wife, Sarah; his son, Benjamin; his parents Dan & Nancy; his sisters,
Janell and Nanette; and other family members and friends. The Turner family give
their thanks to D.A.R.E, prize sponsors, and the campground for their continued
support.
