            [June 17, 2019]

			After
eight full hours of food, fun, games, entertainment, a live-auction,
and a silent-auction at the Relay for Life event, it was time for
the Luminaria Ceremony. For many, it is the most remembered part of
			the day. |

            | The Luminaria Ceremony is a ceremony of hope and
remembrance; a way to honor survivors and appreciate those who have
			claimed the greater victory.

Luminaria bags with names written of those who have
fought or are currently fighting the battle against cancer lined the
track all day. Just before the Luminaria Walk, young people went
around and put glow sticks in the bag. As the overhead room lights
were turned off, walkers gathered around the track in a silent
			tribute to their loved ones.

While the Luminaria Ceremony is a time to grieve for those who have
lost the battle it is, also, a time to reflect on the hope that
tomorrow holds, the promise of a cancer-free world.

There were some tears during the
ceremony, but there were many smiles too, as people heard the names
of their loved ones being read aloud.
After all the names had been read, bag pipes played Amazing Grace.
Some sang the words softly, some hummed the tune, and others just
listened, but all remembered a special someone who has been touched
			by the cancer experience.

The final event of the evening was the Relay for Life Balloon
Launch. Those still in attendance grabbed a helium filled balloon
and took it outside for the command to let go. Releasing balloons is
a tangible way to remember those who have passed. Before releasing
the balloon an individual can write a personal message or say a
prayer. As the balloons drift upwards, it leaves all who are
gathered with a sense of peace.
