Cornland celebrates Zip Code Day-

The village of Cornland, located on Rt. 54 approximately 12 miles
Northeast of Springfield will celebrate Zip Code day on June 25. Zip
Code day in Cornland happens once a century when the date, 6-25-19
matches the zip code - 62519.
Residents of Cornland, past and present will gather in front of the
post office at 6:00pm for a town photo. A commemorative t-shirt was
designed by local photographer, Gracie Tierney and all residents are
encouraged to wear the shirt for the photo. The shirts display an
ear of corn on a postage stamp with the Cornland postmark signifying
the date.

Cornland, an unincorporated village in Logan county, has a population of about
73, not including cats and dogs, was laid out and platted in 1871 when the
Gilman, Clinton and Springfield Railroad was extended to that point. A post
office called Cornland has been in operation since 1872.
Cornland is listed as the location of one of the 5 worst tornado disasters in
Illinois history, according to NOAA. On April 19, 1927 a tornado touched down on
the southeast side of Springfield and moved northeast, destroying Buffalo Hart
and much of Cornland. This tornado killed 11 people.
