[June 21, 2019]
Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres and
DJ LeMahieu homered in the bottom of the fourth inning as the New
York Yankees connected for the 23rd consecutive game and recorded a
10-6 victory over the Houston Astros on Thursday night at Yankee
Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.
Edwin Encarnacion added his league-leading 23rd homer by hitting a
two-run drive in the seventh, as the Yankees won their sixth
straight.
New York's home run streak is the second longest in team history and
two shy of the team record set from June 1-29, 1941.
Jake Marisnick and Alex Bregman hit back-to-back homers in the fifth
for Houston off Nestor Cortes Jr. Rookie Yordan Alvarez hit a solo
homer in the sixth off Tommy Kahnle, and Josh Reddick hit an RBI
single in the eighth as the Astros lost their fifth straight game.
Dodgers 9, Giants 8
In what was expected to be Madison Bumgarner's final start in a San
Francisco uniform at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles gave its own
version of a sendoff, holding on for a victory.
The Giants made things interesting by scoring seven runs over the
final three innings, including four in the ninth.
Bumgarner (3-7), likely to be dealt by the July 31 non-waiver trade
deadline, gave up six runs on 10 hits in just 3 2/3 innings. Kyle
Garlick and Austin Barnes each hit two-run home runs off Bumgarner
two batters apart in the fourth inning.
Rockies 6, Diamondbacks 4 (10 innings)
Colorado rallied to tie the score in the ninth inning, and Chris
Iannetta delivered a two-run single in the 10th to beat Arizona for
the eighth consecutive time with a victory in Phoenix.
The Rockies loaded the bases against Yoshihisa Hirano (3-4) with one
out in the 10th on a single and two walks, before Iannetta drove a
2-0 pitch off the wall in the center field.
Christian Walker's pinch-hit two-run homer to center for Arizona
tied the score at 3 in the sixth inning. The Diamondbacks gained the
lead when Ketel Marte legged out a double on a hit to left, went to
third on a groundout and scored on David Peralta's blooper to
shallow center.
Marlins 7, Cardinals 6 (11 innings)
JT Riddle, who entered the game hitting .187, slugged a two-run
homer in the 11th inning to lead Miami over host St. Louis.
Andrew Miller (3-3) walked Cesar Puello on four pitches before
Riddle pulled a 1-2 slider to right for his third homer of the
season. Jarlin Garcia (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn
the win. Sergio Romo earned his 13th save despite allowing Yadier
Molina's RBI double.
Miami's Zac Gallen allowed one run on five hits in five innings and
was in line for the win before St. Louis rallied. Cardinals veteran
Adam Wainwright allowed three runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings in
his first start off the injured list.
Cubs 7, Mets 4
Anthony Rizzo's two-run double gave Chicago the lead for good during
a six-run third inning as it beat visiting New York in the opener of
a four-game series.
Rookie Adbert Alzolay earned the win in his big-league debut by
tossing four-plus impressive innings of relief.
The Cubs have won two straight. The Mets, who fired pitching coach
Dave Eiland and bullpen coach Chuck Hernandez prior to the game,
have lost four of five.
Reds 7, Brewers 1
Jose Iglesias hit a homer and drove in four runs as visiting
Cincinnati won its season-high fifth straight game, trouncing
slumping Milwaukee.
Iglesias went 2-for-5 with a two-run single and two-run homer,
notching his third four-RBI game this season, as the Reds built a
5-1 lead through five innings. Nick Senzel was 2-for-4 with a homer
and three RBIs, and Yasiel Puig recorded two hits, including a
triple, and stole a base.
Milwaukee's Christian Yelich was 2-for-4 with his league-leading
28th home run, but the Brewers mustered just five hits and lost
their fourth straight.
Nationals 7, Phillies 4
Anthony Rendon and Victor Robles hit homers during a four-run sixth
inning as host Washington beat Philadelphia, completing its first
three-game sweep of the season.
Washington's only previous sweeps came in two-game sets against the
Atlanta Braves in late May and the Chicago White Sox in early June.
The Nationals have won four in a row and captured 17 of 24 games.

Philadelphia, which had two runners thrown out at home, has lost
four in a row and six of seven. The Phillies' Jean Segura tied the
score at 3-3 with a solo homer in the fifth off lefty reliever Matt
Grace. Jay Bruce had three hits, including a homer to make it 7-4.
Athletics 5, Rays 4
Matt Chapman capped a fourth-run ninth inning with a three-run home
run, allowing host Oakland to rally for a walk-off victory over
Tampa Bay in the opener of a four-game series.
The improbable finish came after the Rays had taken advantage of
Blake Treinen's wildness to score three times in the top of the
ninth to go up 4-1.
Rays closer Diego Castillo (1-5) walked two of the first three
batters he faced in the last of the ninth, but got within one out of
his eighth save before Marcus Semien singled in a run to get Oakland
within 4-2. Two pitches later, Chapman bombed a Castillo slider well
into the seats in left-center field, a shot that gave the A's their
fifth walk-off win of the season.
Royals 4, Twins 1
Glenn Sparkman allowed one run over seven innings, and Alex Gordon
had a two-run double as Kansas City snapped Jake Odorizzi's 10-game
winning streak with a victory over visiting Minnesota.
It was the first loss since April 10 against Noah Syndergaard and
the New York Mets for Odorizzi (10-3) who entered the contest with
an American League-best 2.24 ERA. He allowed four runs on eight hits
and a walk before departing after just four innings, throwing 80
pitches, 53 of which were strikes. He struck out two.
Sparkman (2-3), who came into the contest with an 0-3 record and
6.75 ERA in five career appearances against the Twins, allowed five
hits and a walk while striking out three.
Blue Jays 7, Angels 5 (10 innings)
Billy McKinney hit a two-run home run with none out in the bottom of
10th inning, and Toronto salvaged the finale of a four-game series
with a victory over visiting Los Angeles.
McKinney's fourth homer of the season -- and his first career
walk-off blast -- came against Ty Buttrey (4-4) after Randal Grichuk
led off with a single. Nick Kingham (2-1) pitched around a single in
the top of the 10th to earn the win.
Teoscar Hernandez, Eric Sogard and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also homered
for Toronto. Luis Rengifo homered for Los Angeles.
Rangers 4, Indians 2
Danny Santana and Elvis Andrus provided the offense, while
left-hander Mike Minor pitched brilliantly, helping Texas salvage a
split in its four-game series against Cleveland with a victory at
Arlington, Texas.
Minor (7-4) went eight innings to outduel Indians right-hander Shane
Bieber (6-3), who lost for the first time since May 13.
The Indians narrowed the gap to 4-2 when Carlos Santana led off the
ninth inning with his 15th home run of the season off Rangers
reliever Shawn Kelley.
Mariners 5, Orioles 2
Wade LeBlanc pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings as Seattle defeated
visiting Baltimore in the opener of a four-game series.
Omar Narvaez and Domingo Santana hit home runs as the Mariners put
together back-to-back wins for the first time since May 13-14, after
defeating Kansas City 8-2 on Wednesday.
LeBlanc (4-2) allowed four hits, walked two and struck out seven.
Fellow left-hander Roenis Elias pitched the ninth for his eighth
save of the season. Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy (3-9) allowed
four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, with one walk and eight
strikeouts. Baltimore suffered its ninth straight loss.
