The game ended when pitcher Jack Flaherty,
pinch-running for Molina, was picked off second by Romo. It's
the second time in the past week the Cardinals have lost with
Flaherty thrown out for the final out.
Neither starting pitcher got a decision.
Miami's Zac Gallen, a 23-year-old drafted by the Cardinals in
2016 and traded to the Marlins in 2017 in the package for
outfielder Marcell Ozuna, made his major league debut. He
allowed one run on five hits in five innings and was in line for
the win before St. Louis rallied.
Cardinals veteran Adam Wainwright allowed three runs on six hits
in 5 1/3 innings in his first start off the injured list.
Miami opened the scoring in the fourth. Garrett Cooper extended
his hit streak to 12 games by pulling a ground-ball double down
the third-base line. Starlin Castro pulled an RBI double off the
base of the wall in left-center.
Cooper, however, later left the game due to an arm injury.
St. Louis tied the score in the fifth. Wainwright lined a single
to center and scored from first when Paul DeJong's two-out
double rattled around the left-field corner, eluding Harold
Ramirez.
Miami took a 3-1 lead in the sixth. Brian Anderson grounded an
RBI double off third baseman Matt Carpenter's glove, and Puello
drove in a run with a hit-by-pitch.
In the seventh, Ozuna dropped a fly ball on the warning track,
putting Miami's Curtis Granderson at second. Rojas then grounded
a soft RBI single between the legs of reliever John Brebbia and
under the glove of Kolten Wong for a 4-1 edge.
St. Louis scored twice in the seventh, getting an RBI double
from Paul Goldschmidt and Ozuna's run-scoring single.
Anderson then led off the eighth by reaching out and pulling a
homer down the left field line, giving Miami a 5-3 lead.
But Tommy Edman, a rookie from Stanford, tied the score 5-5 with
his two-run homer in the eighth. It was his first major league
homer, sending the game to extra innings.
