Top 25 roundup: No. 9 Michigan topples No. 17 Maryland

[March 04, 2019]  Freshman Ignas Brazdeikis scored 21 points to lead No. 9 Michigan to a key 69-62 Big Ten Conference road win at No. 17 Maryland on Sunday in College Park, Md.

The Wolverines (26-4, 15-4) clamped down defensively in the second half, forcing seven straight Maryland missed shots during a 7-0 run when Michigan took control. Isaiah Livers' 3-pointer put Michigan up 44-43 with 9:13 left to start the spree.

Maryland (21-9, 12-7) went nearly eight minutes without a field goal as Michigan pulled away for just its third road win over a Top 25 team in the last 13 tries, and its first road win this year over a conference team with a winning league mark. The victory kept alive the Wolverines' slim hopes for a Big Ten regular-season title.

Bruno Fernando led the Terrapins with 12 points, 10 rebounds and a career high six blocked shots, but the loss -- Maryland's first home setback in conference play -- dropped the Terrapins out of the top four in the Big Ten standings and the double bye in the conference tournament that goes with a top-four finish.

Creighton 66, No. 10 Marquette 60

Martin Krampelj scored 19 points and Ty-Shon Alexander added 14 as the visiting Bluejays tried to keep their hopes alive for a berth in the NCAA Tournament with an upset of the turnover-plagued Golden Eagles in Milwaukee.

Marquette star Markus Howard scored 33 points, including 21 straight points for the Golden Eagles (23-6, 12-4) in the first half, but the team's next-highest scorer had only seven points. Creighton's win also avenged an overtime loss to Marquette on Jan. 9 in Nebraska.

The Golden Eagles lost their second straight game and also missed a chance to inch closer to their first outright Big East title. They lost to Villanova, who now sits atop the conference standings, on Wednesday.

No. 25 Washington 62, Stanford 61

Jaylen Nowell produced the 12th and final lead change of a see-saw second half on a jumper with 1:30 to go, helping allow the Pac-12 champion Huskies avoid a second consecutive upset loss in beating the host Cardinal.
 

Nowell added what turned out to be the difference-making hoop 57 seconds later as Washington prevailed for the 16th time in the past 18 games. The victory for the Huskies (23-6, 14-2) came three days after they were upset 76-73 by a Cal team that had been previously winless in the conference.

The win allowed Washington to sweep the season series from Stanford. The Cardinal (15-14, 8-9) sustained their fourth loss to ranked opponents in as many tries this season.
