The
Hartem Stags continued to take care of business over the weekend
at the Eighth Grade Class 1A State Tournament in Pana and bring
home their eighth state championship in a row. Since the
formation of the four-class system in 2007, the Stags have won
11 of the last 13 state titles.
On
Friday night the Stags defeated West Lincoln-Broadwell 25-17,
13-25 and 25-11 in the opening round.
In
the semifinals on Saturday the Stags beat Royal Prairieview
Ogden 25-12 and 25-4.
In
the championship match on Saturday the Stags won 25-8 and 25-7
over Limestone Walters.
Hartem Coach Jennifer Hayes has been guiding these girls to
championships for decades now and she believes her 2019 team set
a new record for least amount of points in a set.
As
for the eight championships in a row and this year's team, Hayes
said, "I am so very proud of my 8A state champions. They played
awesome and carried themselves with grace and class. This is
an extremely talented group that has worked tirelessly and
endlessly to reach their goal of winning the state championship.
They played as a team and ended their junior high careers just
like they started in fifth grade - as State Champions!"
