The West Lincoln-Broadwell Lady Wolverines ended their volleyball season on Friday night with a loss to the Hartem Stags in the first round of the Eighth Grade Class 1A State Tournament in Pana.

The Lady Wolverines lost in three sets to the Stags, 17-25, 25-13 and 11-25.

WLB ends the season with a record of 18 wins and 4 losses.

WLB Coach Kim Heitzig knew her team was up against a tough opponent. The Stags had won the last seven state titles consecutively coming into the match.

"We knew to beat Hartem we would have to play a nearly-perfect game physically and mentally," said Heitzig. "We were tentative in the first set, but fought back too late. The second set, we capitalized on Hartem's errors and gained confidence. Hartem's team is so solid and by the third set they had no errors. The girls poured their hearts out in preparing for this game. We may not have won, but it definitely is not a loss for our team. Battling and fighting in stressful games will only make them stronger not only for next year, but in the game of life.

“This season was the start of something special for WLB volleyball. It was truly a team effort from school administration, coaching staff, parents, fans and most of all the players. We are so proud of them and looking forward to next season!"
