When “Langston in
Lincoln,” the jazz tribute to poet Langston Hughes, hit the stage at
Lincoln College May 2-3, there were some special performers.
Local students from the Jazz “Playformance” Program, held at the
First Presbyterian Church Center for Creativity and Community,
joined Lincoln College Contemporary Jazz Studies students onstage
for a portion of the evening.
The elementary and middle school students were mentored by Lincoln
College students, learning to compose and perform for the stage
production. The weeks of preparation culminated in the performance
of their work by local students Araya Lucus, Addison Gray, John
David Dietrich, Charity Woodford, Jeremiah Woodford and Jireh
Woodford.
Lincoln College students who taught the Playformance classes were
Rashann Ford, Christian Lloyd, Taerynn Sablotny, Sean Sheldon and
Elijah Cox, under the direction of Dr. Denise La Grassa, lead
faculty for Contemporary Jazz Studies at Lincoln College.
