This non-competitive run/walk will be held on Saturday, May 18 at
Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, in celebration of the
570 Girls on the Run spring program participants.
Hundreds of third through eighth grade girls at 37 central Illinois
schools and community sites are participating in the Girls on the
Run and Heart & Sole curricula, which focuses on teaching
self-respect and healthy lifestyle choices. The program season ends
with the 5k event that celebrates their training. The event is open
to the entire community. Family, friends, and community supporters
of all ages and abilities are encouraged to register to run or walk
the course with the girls.
Along with the program participants, their volunteer coaches will
also participate in the 5k run/walk. 207 volunteer coaches gave
their time this season to ensure that all girls in central Illinois
are prepared for a lifetime of healthy living and self-respect.
Total 5k turnout is expected to be 1,200 runners and an additional
1,000 family members and friends cheering on the girls.
