			 [May 30, 2019]
The Mount Pulaski Hilltoppers lost the Sectional Championship game
to Salt Fork by a final of 6-5 on Saturday at Danville Stadium.
The visiting Hilltoppers struck for three runs in the first inning
against Salt Fork. Todd Kelly and Drew Martin started the game with
back-to-back doubles. Following a walk to Logan DeRight to load the
bases, Ben Fricke slugged a single to drive in the first run of the
game. With Tanner Farris batting, Martin scored on a wild pitch to
make it 2-0. DeRight was able to score on a passed ball and the
			Hilltoppers lead was quickly 3-0.

Salt Fork started the bottom half of the first inning with four
consecutive base hits of starter Logan DeRight and three runs
scored. Mount Pulaski finally got out of the inning with a double
play and a strikeout to avoid further damage.

The 3-3 tie lasted until the top of the fifth inning. Martin singled
and stole second to start the inning. He advanced to third on a fly
ball to center by DeRight and scored the go-ahead run on a single by
Fricke. The Hilltoppers loaded the bases in the inning and scored
one more run on a walk to Lucas Kuhlman, taking a 5-3 lead.

Martin came in to pitch in relief of DeRight in the bottom of the
sixth inning and after he recorded two quick strikeouts, the 5-3
			Mount Pulaski lead was intact.

The bottom of the seventh inning would be a different story. Salt
Fork tied the game 5-5 and sent the ballgame into extras.

In the bottom of the eighth inning Salt Fork won the game 6-5 on a
hit by pitch with the bases loaded. A rough way to end a spectacular
			season for Mount Pulaski.

The Hilltoppers finish with a 23-6 record.

"I'm so proud of each of our kids for the season we had," said
Hilltoppers coach Joel Washko. "Not just because of all the wins and
making it to a sectional title game, but because of how we achieved
those things. This team set goals before the season and worked every
day to make them a reality. We won many close ballgames this year
and I really attribute that to the work this team put in every day.
I also think the closeness of our team played a role in our success.
All these guys support each other and care for one another. They
formed a truly remarkable bond that will last much longer than their
years in high school. I feel very good about the future of our
program because I now believe we have a culture in place that will
be preserved. Our five seniors get a lot of credit for this. This is
something that takes a while to define and put in place, but I think
we have it now. There is a certain level of expectation I think that
will come with being a part of our program. It's not just about
winning, it's about how our kids commit to each other and how they
			carry themselves."
