Each fall, an outstanding senior from each of the
state’s four-year degree-granting colleges and universities and one
from the community colleges in Illinois is awarded. The Lincoln
Academy of Illinois states, “In the spirit of Lincoln, Student
Laureates are honored for their leadership and service in the
pursuit of the betterment of humanity and for overall excellence in
curricular and extracurricular activities.”
This year, Lincoln College senior Alex Beck was selected and honored
by The Lincoln Academy of Illinois during the annual Student
Laureate Convocation at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 16, at the Old
State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield. Beck was presented
with a certificate of merit signed by the governor, a Lincoln
medallion, and a $1,000 check.
Beck said of the honor, “During my time with Lincoln College, I have
learned a great deal both inside and outside of the classroom. The
perseverance and responsibility that have brought me this far will
serve me for the rest of my life. I have learned how to work
alongside others, lead group projects, and achieve the goals I have
set for myself. The continual development that the staff and faculty
have facilitated have helped me to grow beyond what I could have
asked for.”

Beck is a business administration major with a concentration in
accounting. He has been a committee member of Boy Scout Troop 920 in
Bloomington, Illinois since 2014. While maintaining a 4.0 grade point average,
Beck was also involved in three honor societies: Sigma Beta Delta, Sigma Tau
Delta, and Alpha Sigma Lambda.
Lincoln College President David Gerlach also attended the ceremony in support of
Beck. “Alex achieved a 4.0 GPA, while working and being active in his community.
This recognition serves to honor his accomplishments and we are proud of his
hard work,” said Gerlach.
The Accelerated Bridge to Education (ABE) program offers 5-week evening hybrid
courses that meet one night a week supplemented by online learning in Normal,
Peoria, Oglesby, and Lincoln.
“Lincoln College is an institute that I have been happy to call a second home
for the past two years. The learning never stops, and I am happy to have come
away with such a strong base to plant myself while continuing my growth,” said
Beck.
Beck is set to give the Student Address at Lincoln College’s Commencement in May
2020.
