Lincoln spotted Springfield a 2-0 lead in the
first quarter and after that it was the Senators playing catch
up all night long.
A baseline drive by Kaden Froebe put Lincoln in the scoring
column and the Senators really had no idea what was about to
happen.
Lincoln ran out to an 8-2 lead with buckets in the paint by
Kameron Whiteman and Dylan Singleton. Another baseline drive by
Froebe and the Railers were up 10-4.
Springfield was beginning to get the message as they waited at
the free throw line for Froebe to sink the 'and one.' The
Railers played patient and smart basketball in this first
quarter, and despite a couple following buckets by the Senator's
Bennie Slater, the Railers lead was 11-8 at the end of the first
quarter.
The Senators may have showed their frustration with a few more
fouls in the second quarter but that didn’t seem to bother the
Railers, who would sink 7-of-9 from the free throw line.
Singleton also had no problem pushing his way to the basket
against the big guys and coming up with points in the paint.
Froebe continued to drive baseline in the quarter and a 20-12
lead was quickly built by Lincoln. After a jumper from Froebe
just inside the 3-point range, the Railers lead was 24-14 with
3:46 remaining in the second quarter.
Whiteman hit his first three of the season to settle the score
at 27-18. Springfield would go on a 5-0 run to finish the half
and Lincoln held on to a 27-23 lead.
The third quarter scoring was off to a good start with Will
Ewald wide open going through the lane and laying in the first
points.
Next time around it was Landon Hullinger getting a bucket in the
paint.
Froebe stretched the lead to 33-28 on his drive but the Senators
did not shut down by no means. Taryn Wallace hit a long three
for Springfield to inch closer.
At the other end, Whiteman was itching to get hot from the
3-point range and he nailed a three to extend the lead to 36-31.
Back-to-back buckets by Ewald kept Lincoln in front 40-33 and
the energy inside Roy S. Anderson on this Thanksgiving Eve was
electric, especially with the Railers Pep Band cranking out
music as some former alumni band members sat in and played with
the current band members.
Hullinger finished off the third quarter scoring after Singleton
spotted him darting to the basket. The whole night it was a
medley of Railers going back door and this time it was
Hullinger’s turn. The end result was a 42-33 Lincoln lead and
the Senators had just about had enough as the third quarter came
to a close.
Lincoln showed no signs of slowing down in the fourth quarter.
Hustle was the name of the game. Ewald made good on another
drive to the basket to start the scoring.
Then it was Whiteman getting comfortable some 20 feet away and
sinking another three.
And finally, talk about hustle, Seth Tungate leaps above
everyone to grab an offensive rebound and quickly puts it back
up for two points. Lincoln’s lead was 49-36 with 5:10 remaining
in the game.
The Railers continued to pour it on. Another three from Whiteman
was nice, but not just nice, it was nice like pumpkin pie with a
big dollop of homemade whipped cream nice because you see Froebe
was driving to the lane when he spotted his buddy camped in the
corner and he quickly dished it off so the crowd would have
another chance to chant “Kam Kam Kam.” It sounds really nice
coming from a packed Railer Nation, who on this particular night
was dressed in black.
Next time down the court Whiteman returned the favor and found
Froebe for the bucket and with just under two minutes to play
Lincoln was up 55-39. Froebe finished the game off with one
final drive and the 'and one' to seal the Railers victory. The
final score was 58-43.
Kaden Froebe and Kameron Whiteman each led all scorers with 18
points. Will Ewald tossed in 10 points for the Railers.
Bennie Slater led Springfield with 17 points.
Lincoln won the battle on the boards, 28-23. Landon Hullinger
pulled down 8 rebounds and Dylan Singleton snagged 6 rebounds.
Lincoln improves to 2-0 on the season.
The Railers will play Belleville Althoff at 8 p.m. on Friday
night.
In the early game Wednesday night, Danville defeated Limestone
72-47.
Happy Thanksgiving and do not skip the pie!
