 The opening reception will take place from 5 to 8
p.m. on Thursday, October 10 at the Art Institute Gallery, 112 S.
McLean St, Lincoln. In addition to viewing the artworks and enjoying
refreshments, visitors will be able to discuss the works with the
artists themselves.
With the coming of autumn, the sharp glare and harsh shadows of
midsummer are replaced by a much richer and more subtle palette of
jewel and smoky tones. LCA member Tony Shuff will take advantage of
this in creating his contributions to the show. “Shadows are a joy
to play with,” he says. “You are considering not only the various
light sources, but also the interactions of reflected light within
the cast shadows.” Capturing these intricate pathways and
reflections gives a mellow depth to his images. Doris Huffman
carries the drama of shadows into her work in portraiture. The
various effects of a dark backdrop, a pair of pink sunglasses or a
wide brimmed hat set the mood for her portrait studies in acrylic.
“In nature, when we think of shadows we think of the welcoming shade
of trees, so shadows have a positive connotation,” says artist Pam
Moriearty. She, Ruth Fredericks and Jan Carleen Villareal use light
and shade to bring emphasis to their nature artworks. In contrast,
Jason Hoffman will be showing a unique low table in steel, wood,
concrete, aluminum and glass, materials which vary greatly in the
way they transmit, absorb and reflect light. He says, “I am
interested in seeing the shadows the piece will cast with sunlight
coming through the gallery windows.”

For those thinking of the coming of Halloween, shadows and shades
can have much darker implications, which some other LCA members will be
considering in their works. Artists in the exhibit also include Laura Elliott,
Bev Noble and Moses Pinkerton, as well as guest artists.
After opening night, the artworks will be available for viewing and sale until

group’s annual Holiday Show and Sale.
