NHL roundup: Predators trip Caps with four goals in third

[October 11, 2019] Nick Bonino and Mattias Ekholm scored 28 seconds apart late in the game as the Nashville Predators posted four third-period goals to rally for a wild 6-5 victory over the visiting Washington Capitals on Thursday night.

After T.J. Oshie gave Washington a 5-4 lead on a laser past Pekka Rinne (21 saves) with 9:51 left in regulation, Nashville answered like it did all night. Bonino tied it at 14:52 into the third and Ekholm sent the home crowd into a frenzy with his blast from the point that found the net with 4:40 left in the third period.

With Nashville down 4-2, Ryan Johansen (two goals) poked the puck underneath Braden Holtby (32 saves) on the power play to get his team within one at 5:03 into the third. The Predators tied it a little over a minute later when Matt Duchene delivered at 6:13 with his first goal.

Oshie answered, but Washington could not hold on while losing for the first time in regulation over five games this season. Alex Ovechkin scored two power-play goals for the Capitals, who are 0-1-2 while giving up third-period leads in each of the last three games.

Lightning 7, Maple Leafs 3

Nikita Kucherov had two goals and two assists, Steven Stamkos had a goal and three assists, Brayden Point had two goals and an assist, and visiting Tampa Bay defeated Toronto.

Kevin Shattenkirk and Ondrej Palat also scored for the Lightning, who got 25 saves from goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy. Anthony Cirelli added three assists.

Andreas Johnsson, John Tavares and Auston Matthews scored for Toronto. Frederik Andersen allowed seven goals on 28 shots. During the third period, he was replaced by Michael Hutchinson, who stopped all five shots he faced.

Oilers 4, Devils 3 (SO)

Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl scored the lone goal in the shootout, and Mikko Koskinen stopped all three shots as the Oilers remained undefeated by keeping New Jersey winless in Newark, N.J.

Draisaitl scored as the shootout's final shooter, after Koskinen denied Nikita Gusev, rookie Jack Hughes and Taylor Hall. The Oilers won their first four games for the fourth time in franchise history and first time since 2008-09.

Connor McDavid registered his third goal and seventh assist, and James Neal notched his NHL-best seventh marker in the wins.

Red Wings 4, Canadiens 2

Anthony Mantha scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and Detroit won in regulation at Montreal for the first time in 12 seasons.

The Red Wings' previous regulation victory in Montreal was on Dec. 4, 2007. They had also lost nine consecutive times to the Canadiens, regardless of venue. Detroit had won in overtime or a shootout on three occasions in Montreal over the previous 14 visits.

Tyler Bertuzzi, Darren Helm and Luke Glendening also scored, Danny DeKeyser had two assists and Jonathan Bernier made 33 saves for the Red Wings. Joel Armia and Max Domi each scored a goal and Carey Price turned aside 30 shots for the Canadiens.

Penguins 2, Ducks 1

Jake Guentzel scored the go-ahead goal at 7:24 of the third period to lift host Pittsburgh to a win over Anaheim, which sustained its first loss of the season.

Guentzel picked up his first goal of the season, thanks to a strong play by captain Sidney Crosby.

Crosby and the other member of the team's top line, Dominik Simon, gained control of the puck from Ondrej Kase along the left-wing boards in the Penguins end. Crosby carried the puck through the neutral zone, cutting to the far side. At the right point, he fended off Anaheim's Josh Manson with one hand, carried the puck deep and backhanded a centering pass.

Blues 6, Senators 4

David Perron scored twice to lift visiting St. Louis past Ottawa.

The Blues rallied from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to win their third consecutive game. The rebuilding Senators are winless in three games.

Ryan O'Reilly had a goal and three assists for the Blues, and Oskar Sundqvist, Jay Bouwmeester and Brayden Schenn also scored. Goaltender Jake Allen stopped 25 of 29 shots for the Blues in his first start of the season.

Jets 5, Wild 2

Patrik Laine collected two goals and two assists, and Connor Hellebuyck made 38 saves to lead Winnipeg to a victory over visiting Minnesota.

Blake Wheeler scored and set up a goal, Kyle Connor and Jack Roslovic each tallied in the third period, and Mark Scheifele added two assists for the Jets, who snapped a six-game, regular-season losing streak against Minnesota.

Ryan Hartman and Brad Hunt each scored a goal for the Wild, who have opened the season with three straight regulation losses for the first time in franchise history. Devan Dubnyk finished with 27 saves.

Sharks 5, Blackhawks 4

Patrick Marleau scored twice in his return as San Jose avoided the worst start in franchise history with a victory in Chicago's home opener.

The Sharks (1-4-0) rallied from a one-goal deficit four times, with Barclay Goodrow scoring the go-ahead goal at 4:47 of the third period. That gave San Jose its first lead of the season.

Kevin Labanc and Brent Burns also scored for the Sharks. Goaltender Aaron Dell made 26 saves.

Flames 3, Stars 2 (SO)

Johnny Gaudreau scored in the third round of the shootout and Calgary erased a two-goal deficit in the third period en route to a road victory over Dallas.

With the opportunity to win the game on his stick, Gaudreau made all kinds of moves before tucking a backhand shot past Stars goalie Ben Bishop for the clinching tally.

David Rittich stopped 34 shots, four in overtime -- including an Alexander Radulov penalty shot in the extra period -- plus two of three in the shootout to backstop the Flames to a win that snapped a six-game losing streak against Dallas.

Avalanche 4, Bruins 2

Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog each had a goal and an assist, Andre Burakovsky broke a tie with an unassisted goal late in the third period, and Colorado beat Boston.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare also scored, and Philipp Grubauer stopped 39 shots to help the Avalanche start the season with three straight wins.

David Pastrnak had a goal and an assist and Zdeno Chara had the other goal for the Bruins. Jaroslav Halak had 32 saves for Boston, which lost for the first time in four games, all on the road, to start the year.

Coyotes 4, Golden Knights 1

Conor Garland scored two goals and Darcy Kuemper finished with 37 saves as Arizona recorded its first win of the season, defeating Vegas in Glendale, Ariz.

Nick Schmaltz and Niklas Hjalmarsson also scored for Arizona. It was the third career two-goal game for Garland. Shea Theodore scored the lone goal for Vegas, which suffered its second consecutive loss.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 13 saves in relief of Malcolm Subban, who turned aside 12 shots in his first start of the season before leaving with an undisclosed injury.
