Misdirection or light blockage, artistic expressions in ‘Shadows and Shades’

[October 16, 2019]   LINCOLN - Logan County Arts transformed the Lincoln Art Institute into ‘Shadows and Shades,’ the theme of their latest exhibit that opened this past Thursday evening.

The walls of the gallery were lined with paintings and photographs that produced their own unique take on the premise.

Shadows and shade can be produced by the sun’s rays being blocked by an object, but there can be so much more to the idea of shade and shadows. “I wanted to express shadows in an emotional context, as one would experience in their mind,” said Grace Stephenson. She created a work that mirrors the eastern philosophy of Yin and Yang seasoned with the wonders of the psyche.

Jeff Williams uses the word shade with an entirely different meaning. To him shade means expressing skepticism for someone’s point of view or statement. “I could say, I do brain surgery on the side, and you would shade me on that statement, be skeptical, very skeptical,” he said with a laugh.

Shadows and shades can mean entirely different ideas in art. “Art is like a conversation between the artist and the viewer, each gets something different from a creation,” said artist Alice Ferguson.
