Yoan Moncada went 3-for-5 with a
double, a triple and four RBIs as the Chicago White Sox defeated the
host Seattle Mariners 9-7 Friday night in the opener of a three-game
series.
Jose Abreu, Adam Engel and Eloy Jimenez homered for the White Sox,
who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Josh Osich (3-0) got the victory with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of
relief. Alex Colome got the last four outs for his 27th save.
Abreu hit a solo shot in the first, his 33rd of the season, off
Mariners starter Yusei Kikuchi (6-10).
The Mariners scored three times in the bottom of the inning off
White Sox starter Dylan Covey. After getting the leadoff hitter out,
Covey walked three straight batters and then unleashed a wild pitch
to tie the score. Kyle Lewis followed with a sacrifice fly, and Omar
Narvaez's RBI single made it 3-1.
The White Sox got a run back in the second. With two outs, Ryan
Cordell, Leury Garcia and Tim Anderson hit consecutive singles to
plate a run.
Chicago took the lead in the third. Jimenez led off with a walk, and
Moncada followed with a run-scoring triple. Danny Mendick's RBI
single put the White Sox ahead, though he was thrown out at second
on the play. Engel followed with a solo homer, his fourth, to make
it 5-3.
That was it for Kikuchi, who gave up five runs on 10 hits in 2 1/3
innings, with one walk and one strikeout.

The White Sox added three runs in the fourth off Wade LeBlanc.
Garcia led off with a single, and Anderson doubled. Abreu walked to
load the bases, and an out later, Moncada hit a three-run double to
left to make it 8-3.
The Mariners scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Narvaez led
off with a single and Dee Gordon singled an out later. With two
outs, Shed Long delivered a two-run single to make it 8-5, knocking
out Covey.
The Mariners scored twice in the eighth to pull within a run. Two
walks put two runners on with two outs, and Daniel Vogelbach brought
them both home with a double. Another walk put the go-ahead run on
base, but Colome got Austin Nola to fly out to center to end the
threat.
Jimenez homered in the ninth, his 27th, for the final margin.
