The Lincoln College Women’s Volleyball team faced some stiff
competition this weekend at the two-day Millikin University
Invitational. Lincoln lost twice on Friday evening and split two
matches played on Saturday to move to 8-6 on the season.
LC started their weekend off with a three-set loss to Greenville
University (25-18, 25-22, 25-22) then fell in five sets to Illinois
College. Against IC, the Lady Lynx got off to a poor start dropping
the first set 25-16, but rebounded to win the next two sets by
scores of 25-19 and 25-18. Unfortunately, Lincoln was unable to
close out the match in set four, losing it 25-18 then trailed most
of the way in set-five to eventually fall 15-10.
On Saturday, Lincoln began play with another five-set thriller, this
time against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. LC took charge
early with a strong performance to win set one 25-16, but the team
was unable to sustain their level of play and lost the next two sets
25-19, 25-18. Lincoln returned to form in set four as they raced out
to a 6-0 lead behind the powerful jump serve of junior Ashlyn Slater
(Grain Valley, MO). LC maintained their early advantage for the rest
of the set and won it 25-21 to force a deciding set to 15. In that
set, Lincoln held on to a two-point lead most of the way before
Slater again went on a run of serves that put LC up 14-9. The Lady
Lynx eventually end the match with a 15-10 set five victory.

Lincoln did not have much time to enjoy their win over RHIT as they
played their final match of the weekend right away against Concordia
University (WI). LC battled hard in set one, but eventually fell
26-24 and CU was able to keep the momentum from that win going in
the next two sets to take them by scores of 25-12 and 25-15.
“We played hard this weekend against some very talented teams,” said
Lincoln Head Coach Mark Tippett. “The teams we faced each ran quick
offenses which challenged our defense to catch up. I thought we did
a good job of adjusting and battled hard in every set.”
Lincoln’s Amazing Ashby (Aurora, CO) was selected to the event’s
All-Tournament Team.
Next up for LC will be a trip to Elsah, Illinois on Tuesday for a
match at Principia College (NCAA).
