Jeimer Candelario hit a two-run
homer, Willi Castro delivered his first career homer and the host
Detroit Tigers salvaged the finale of a three-game series against
the Chicago White Sox with a 6-3 win on Sunday.
Victor Reyes supplied two hits, including a solo homer, and scored
twice for Detroit. Gordon Beckham contributed a solo homer and Dawel
Lugo added three hits.
Tigers starter Matthew Boyd (9-11) pitched the minimum five innings
to collect the victory. Boyd, who missed his last start while
attending to a family matter, gave up three runs on eight hits and
struck out six. Joe Jimenez pitched the ninth for his eighth save.
Detroit designated hitter Miguel Cabrera was not in the lineup due
to knee soreness.
Eloy Jimenez had a two-run homer for the White Sox. Reynaldo Lopez
(9-15) allowed five runs on nine hits in four innings.
The White Sox struck first with two out in the first inning. Jose
Abreu singled before Jimenez hit a two-run blast that traveled an
estimated 424 feet to left.
Detroit evened the score in the bottom of the inning. Reyes led off
with a single and scored two outs later on Candelario's long ball to
right.
The first two White Sox reached base in the second but Boyd retired
the next three batters to escape the jam.
Beckham gave Detroit a 3-2 lead with his two-out homer to left in
the bottom of the inning.
The Tigers tacked on a run in the third with two down. Harold Castro
doubled and Candelario walked. Christin Stewart then smacked a
single to right, bringing in Castro. Grayson Greiner struck out with
the bases loaded later in the inning.
Reyes made it 5-2 in the fourth with his third homer this season, a
two-out shot to left.
