The game on the west side of Lincoln was a
battle between two of the city's top teams this season.
Monday night's game began with the Wolverines quickly jumping
out to an 8-0 lead that included two 3's by Trey Schilling.
The WLB lead escalated to 11-0 before Jarrett Evers would
finally get the Crusaders on the board with a bucket at the 1:35
mark. This sparked a 7-0 run by Carroll Catholic and at the end
of the first quarter the score was 11-7, West Lincoln Broadwell
with the lead.
Carroll Catholic tied the game 14-14 in the second quarter after
a steal by the Crusaders allowed Darren Stevens to go
coast-to-coast with the layup.
Thirty seconds later another steal by the Crusaders allowed
Evers to set up for a three and Carroll Catholic had their first
lead of the game, 17-14 the score. Schilling quickly tied the
game 17-17 with yet another three and the packed WLB gymnasium
was loving the effort by both teams.
Before the half came to a close, Landon Heinzel would give the
Wolverines a 20-17 lead with his basket in the paint and the
'and one.'
Midway through the third quarter the Crusaders tied the game
23-23 after Stevens hit back-to-back buckets to lead the surge.
Then it was Evers with the field goal to reclaim the Crusaders
lead, 25-23 now the score.
Jude Toft would tie the game on two free throws at the 2:29 mark
as the Wolverines were making a comeback.
Heinzel put WLB back on top around the minute mark. With three
seconds left in the third quarter, a quick pass from Toft to
Heinzel in the lane stretched the WLB lead to 29-25 after the
basket by Heinzel was good.
The fourth quarter was just as exciting as the previous three
quarters for basketball fans.
First, Schilling extended the WLB lead to 31-25 with his basket.
Then it was Brady Miller really getting the crowd fired up when
he hit a three to put the Wolverines in the driver's seat 34-25.
At the 3:20 mark Schilling was at again from beyond the arc and
this time his trey put WLB on top with a double-digit lead,
37-27 the score.
The Crusaders never gave up though. In the last minute of the
game, Evers hit a couple 3's for Carroll Catholic to give them
hope but there just wasn't enough time for a comeback on this
night.
West Lincoln Broadwell would take the regional title by a final
score of 42-37. A great game on both sides.
Trey Schilling led the Wolverines with 14 points in the win.
For Carroll Catholic, Jarrett Evers led all scorers with 16
points and Darren Stevens tossed in 14 points.
Carroll Catholic ends the season with a 17-5 record.
