The Illinois Fighting Illini came out
flat as a pancake, shooting a lackluster 26% from the field in the
first half, scoring only 20 points, missing several free throws, and
all of that came back to haunt them when they lost in the final
seconds Tuesday night in the State Farm Center.
|
They
did overcome a 20-point deficit and actually took the lead a couple
of times but couldn’t hold on as they lost a heartbreaking game to
the Michigan State Spartans 70-69.
To add insult to the jarring loss, Illini star Ayo Dosunmu was
injured trying to make a winning move on the game’s final play and
we won’t know the extent of his injuries until later today.
Ayo Dosunmu did lead the way for Illinois with 17 points. Andres
Feliz scored 15 and Kofi Cockburn added 11 and had a last minute
and1 that rimmed out that may have won the game.

The loss makes the Illini 16-8, 8-5 with two rough road tilts
coming up, first to Rutgers then to Penn State. They’ll be made
all the more difficult without the services of Dosunmu their
leader. [By JEFF MAYFIELD]
