Top 25 roundup: No. 1 Baylor beats Oklahoma, makes history

[February 19, 2020] Jared Butler scored 22 points to lead No. 1 Baylor to a 65-54 win over Oklahoma on Tuesday night in Norman, Okla., as the Bears secured a place in the Big 12 history book.

Baylor's 23rd consecutive win broke the record for longest winning streak by a Big 12 team, set by Kansas in 1996-97. The Bears (24-1, 13-0) dropped their second game of the season to Washington before starting the current streak.

The win sets up a Saturday showdown at home against No. 3 Kansas and maintains the Bears' one-game lead over the Jayhawks atop the conference.

The loss was the second consecutive and third in five games for the Sooners (16-10, 6-7). Kristian Doolittle led Oklahoma with 18 points but shot just 5 of 14 from the floor. He also had 10 rebounds.

No. 17 West Virginia 65, Oklahoma State 47

Sean McNeil and Miles McBride scored 11 points apiece, and a dominant second half helped the Mountaineers roll to a win over the Cowboys in Morgantown, W.Va.

The result was the 879th win in the coaching career of Bob Huggins, allowing him to tie North Carolina legend Dean Smith for sixth place on the all-time list of NCAA Division I coaches.

Taz Sherman and Jermaine Haley added nine points each for West Virginia (19-7, 7-6 Big 12). Cameron McGriff led all scorers with 19 points for the Cowboys (13-13, 3-10). The Cowboys scored just 14 points and shot 16.7 percent (5 of 30) in the second half, missing eight of their last nine field-goal attempts.

No. 5 Dayton 66, VCU 61

Dwayne Cohill and Jalen Crutcher each made two free throws in the closing seconds as the Flyers hung on to beat the Rams in Richmond, Va.

The Flyers (24-2, 13-0 Atlantic 10) earned their 15th consecutive victory. The Rams (17-9, 7-6) lost their third in a row. Crutcher finished 8-for-8 from the line while leading Dayton with 18 points.

Dayton's Obi Toppin, who is on five national player of the year watch lists and entered play averaging 19.7 points per game, scored just three points in the first half and finished with 12. He opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, but that would be his only basket of the first half. Toppin went 1-for-4 and also recorded just one rebound and one assist before the break.

No. 7 Maryland 76, Northwestern 67

Jalen Smith and Anthony Cowan Jr. combined for 41 points as the Terrapins beat the Wildcats in College Park, Md. The victory was Maryland's ninth straight.

Smith had 22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds while Cowan had 19 points and five assists. Maryland (22-4, 13-3 Big Ten) improved to 15-0 at home this season and remained atop the conference standings. The Wildcats (6-19, 1-14) have lost 10 consecutive games.

Ryan Young had 17 points, 11 in the second half, to pace Northwestern, which shot 52.9 percent (18 of 34) in the second half to stay close. Boo Buie had 15 points and Miller Kopp added 13.

No. 8 Florida State 82, Pittsburgh 67

Patrick Williams scored 16 points and the host Seminoles avenged their season-opening loss to the Panthers with a convincing win in Tallahassee, Fla.

Florida State (22-4, 12-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) improved to 14-0 at home this season. The Seminoles, the only ACC team with a perfect home record, are tied for second with No. 11 Louisville, a half-game behind No. 6 Duke in the conference standings.

Au'Diese Toney led Pittsburgh (15-12, 6-10) with 15 points and seven rebounds, but Trey McGowens, the Panthers' second-leading scorer at 12.5 points per game, shot 0-for-7 from the floor and wound up with just three points.

Illinois 62, No. 9 Penn State 56

Ayo Dosunmu scored 24 points, including a clutch runner in the lane with 16.1 seconds left, to lift the Illini past the Nittany Lions in University Park, Pa., ending Penn State's eight-game winning streak.

Kofi Cockburn added 14 points and seven rebounds for Illinois (17-9, 9-6 Big Ten), which snapped a four-game losing streak. It was the Illini's first road win over a team within the top 10 since 2012. Illinois also broke a six-game losing streak to Penn State.

Lamar Stevens led Penn State (20-6, 10-5) with 13 points and nine rebounds while Izaiah Brockington added 10 points.

No. 10 Kentucky 79, LSU 76

Immanuel Quickley scored 21 points and the Wildcats extended their lead in the Southeastern Conference by beating the Tigers in Baton Rouge, La.

The Wildcats (21-5, 11-2) won their fifth consecutive game while the Tigers (18-8, 9-4), the defending SEC regular-season champions, lost for the fourth time in five games after winning their first eight conference games. LSU fell into third place, a half-game behind No. 13 Auburn, which visits Georgia on Wednesday.

Tyrese Maxey scored 14 points, Nick Richards had 13 and Nate Sestina added 11 for Kentucky. Ashton Hagans, who went to the bench late with a bruised thigh, also scored 11 points. Skylar Mays had 17 points to lead five Tigers in double figures.

No. 15 Creighton 73, No. 19 Marquette 65

Ty-Shon Alexander scored 22 points for the Bluejays, and the nation's leading scorer, Markus Howard, was limited to 13 points as Creighton beat the Golden Eagles in Milwaukee.

Creighton (21-6, 10-4 Big East) earned a regular-season series sweep of Marquette (17-8, 7-6). The Bluejays have won eight of their past nine games.

Marcus Zegarowski, who made all four of his shots in the second half, finished with 17 points and five rebounds for the Bluejays. Marquette was led by Sacar Anim's 18 points. Howard wound up making 4 of 14 shots from the field while contributing five assists and four rebounds.
