Top 25 roundup: No. 12 Maryland stymies No. 11 Ohio State

[January 08, 2020] Anthony Cowan Jr. had 20 points to lead 12th-ranked Maryland to a 67-55 victory over visiting No. 11 Ohio State in a Big Ten game on Tuesday night in College Park, Md.

The Terrapins (13-2, 3-1) won their third straight behind staunch defense and some timely 3-point shooting. Maryland was 8 of 18 (44.4 percent) behind the arc, while limiting the Buckeyes (11-4, 1-3) to 31.3 percent shooting, including just 5 of 27 from 3-point range.

Ohio State, which was recently poised to take over the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press poll, lost its third consecutive game. The Buckeyes were led by the Wesson brothers -- Kaleb had 15 points and nine rebounds, while Andre scored 14. Freshman guard D.J. Carton also had 14.

Jalen Smith added 11 points and seven rebounds for Maryland, and Darryl Morsell had 10. Both were keys to the strong defensive effort, with Smith keeping Kaleb Wesson in check in the second half.

No. 4 Baylor 57, No. 22 Texas Tech 52

Davion Mitchell scored 14 points, and Mark Vital pulled down 13 rebounds to lead a dominating performance on the boards as the Bears beat the host Red Raiders in Big 12 play in Lubbock, Texas.

Baylor (12-1, 2-0) took the lead seven minutes into the game, earned a three-point advantage at halftime and never allowed Texas Tech closer than three points until the final seconds.

Texas Tech (10-4, 1-1) got within 52-50 on a three-point play by Chris Clarke with 29 seconds to play. But Baylor made its free throws down the stretch and snapped the Red Raiders' 15-game home win streak.

No. 13 Louisville 74, Miami 58

ACC Preseason Player of the Year Jordan Nwora had 19 points, 12 rebounds and four assists, leading the Cardinals to a win over the visiting Hurricanes.

Louisville center Steven Enoch added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Dwyane Sutton had nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Louisville (12-3, 3-1 ACC), which was ranked No. 1 in the nation one month ago, snapped a two-game losing streak. The Cardinals also swept their two-game season series against the Hurricanes (9-5, 1-3).

No. 14 Kentucky 78, Georgia 69

The Wildcats placed four players in double figures and pulled away late from the host Bulldogs in Athens, Ga.

Tyrese Maxey and Nick Richards led the Wildcats (11-3, 2-0 SEC ) with 17 points each, followed by Immanuel Quickley with 15 and Ashton Hagans with 13. Hagans played despite suffering a sprained ankle last Saturday against Missouri.

A give-and-go from Maxey to Richards put Kentucky up 70-64 with 1:42 left. The Bulldogs (10-4, 0-1) would get no closer, despite 23 points from freshman Anthony Edwards.

No. 16 Villanova 64, Creighton 59

Collin Gillespie scored 24 points and the Wildcats rallied from a 14-point deficit to defeat the Bluejays in Omaha, Neb.

Saddiq Bey scored 11 points, Jermaine Samuels added 10 and freshman Jeremiah Robinson-Earl swept 14 rebounds for the Wildcats (11-3, 2-1 Big East).

Christian Bishop led Creighton with 16 points and nine rebounds, but its 15-game home winning streak was snapped. The Bluejays (12-4, 1-2) had won their first 10 at home this season.

Boston College 60, No. 18 Virginia 53

Jared Hamilton hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 38 seconds left and the short-handed Eagles handed the Cavaliers their first regular-season ACC loss in 11 months in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

The Eagles (9-6, 3-1 ACC) started three freshmen and played without senior point guard Derryck Thornton, who leads the team in scoring and assists, due to an ankle injury. Senior forward Nik Popovic missed his sixth straight game with a back injury.

Jay Heath scored 17 points and Hamilton had 16 for Boston College, which weathered a 20-3 second-half run by Virginia (11-3, 3-1). The Cavaliers shot just 32.7 percent from the field and 18.8 percent (3 of 16) from 3-point distance.

Rutgers 72, No. 20 Penn State 61

Ron Harper Jr. scored 22 points, including making 12 of 12 shots from the free throw line, as the Scarlet Knights beat the visiting Nittany Lions in Piscataway, N.J., for their sixth consecutive win.

Jacob Young added 13 points, and Myles Johnson had 10 for the Scarlet Knights (12-3, 3-1 Big Ten), who are two games above .500 in the conference for the first time since 2002.

Myreon Jones led Penn State (12-3, 2-2) with 21 points while Mike Watkins added 17. Lamar Stevens had 12. The Nittany Lions went ahead 49-47 with 8:39 left but Rutgers rallied, helped by eight free throws from Harper, including six in a 10-0 run for a 68-54 lead with 1:41 to go.
