Todd Kelly, a senior at Mount Pulaski High School, has signed his national letter of intent to play baseball at Spoon River College in Canton, Illinois.

Kelly signed his letter on Monday, January 13, 2020, in front of friends and family at Mount Pulaski High School. His Hilltopper teammates and coaches, Joel Washko and Troy Burgard, were also in attendance.

Kelly is excited for the opportunity to play for the Snappers and attend Spoon River for a number of reasons.

“They are building a brand new baseball stadium so they will have a brand new field when I get there next year,” said Kelly. “The housing is only three years old I think and the walk from my apartment to the class building is really close. The class sizes are small. Plus, I am thinking about transferring to Western Illinois University after my two years at Spoon River and for Criminal Justice they have Western professors come over and teach. So if I go to Western I’ll know what to expect.”

Hilltoppers head coach Joel Washko is proud of Kelly for putting in the work that led to this opportunity at the next level.

“I think Todd is a great example of someone who has improved and worked hard to get the opportunity to play collegiately,” said Washko. “He has come a long way since his freshman year. But I think it’s because he had a desire to keep getting better and one day be able to pitch in college. I am proud of him for accomplishing one of his goals and look forward to see what his senior year has in store.”

Kelly is a 6’4 left-handed pitcher who has also played first base and outfield for the Hilltoppers. Washko said Kelly is going to Spoon River as a pitcher, but is unsure whether he will be a starter or a reliever. Last year, Kelly had a 4-2 record with one save. He worked 41.1 innings and had a 2.88 ERA with 70 strikeouts and 26 walks. Opponents hit just .171 off Kelly last season.

Kelly is the son of Rob and Brandy Kelly of Mount Pulaski.

Congratulations, Todd!
