Koepka and his older brother, tour star Brooks
Koepka, pulled out of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell,
Conn., after Brooks Koepka's caddie tested positive for the
coronavirus. Both Koepka brothers tested negative for COVID-19,
and they said they were withdrawing as a precaution to prevent
the possible spread of the virus.
Chase Koepka had made the Travelers field as a qualifier early
last week.
On Thursday, the PGA Tour announced that it was giving Chase
Koepka a place in the field for the July 9-12 event at Muirfield
Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. As a result, the Workday
Charity Open will feature 157 players instead of the planned
156.
PGA Tour chief of operations Tyler Dennis said in a statement,
"Given the extraordinary circumstances that led to his
withdrawal after Monday qualifying, a start in the Workday
Charity Open as a result of his selfless act was the right thing
to do.
"The term 'abundance of caution' was not part of our vernacular
four months ago and to that point, I can't say enough about our
players that put their Tour -- and the health and safety of
their peers and all involved with our tournaments and our
communities -- above their own goals."
Chase Koepka, 26, spent the 2018 season playing on the European
Tour, and he competed on Europe's second-tier Challenge Tour in
2019. He has appeared in only a handful of U.S. PGA Tour events,
most recently coming in 67th in the Shriners Hospitals for
Children Open and tying for 46th in the The CJ Cup @ Nine
Bridges, both last October.
The Travelers Championship has stated that it will give Chase
Koepka an exemption into its field next year.
