[July 21, 2020]  LINCOLN - John E. Denning, 94, of Lincoln, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at his home in Lincoln.

Service:  Due to the risk of COVID-19, a private family graveside service will be held at a later date.

John E. Denning, 94, of Lincoln, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at his home in Lincoln.

John was born on December 18, 1925 in Lincoln, the son of John J. and Bernadine (Koyn) Denning.

He married Dorothy Wehner on January 26, 1946, in Lincoln. She preceded him in death on January 5, 2009.

John is survived by his children; John (Arlene) Denning, Michael Denning, Jeffery (Julie) Denning, and Ann (Randy) Matson; his seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and his German Shepard companion, Lady.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; his two brothers, and his sister.

Mr. Denning was a veteran of World War II he served 32 months in the Army as a Corporal Technician- he served with General Patton’s third Army in Germany. He was a former Republican Precinct Committee man, Assistant Supervisor, Deputy Sherriff, past President of Eagles Lodge 2708, he also served as County Chairman for the Boy Scouts, March of Dimes, and he was active with youth baseball.

At the time of his retirement in 1985 he was employed by the State of Illinois Department of Mental Health. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, and American Legion Post #263.

Due to the risk of COVID-19, a private family graveside service will be held at a later date.

Memorial donation may be made in John’s name to the Lincoln American Legion Post #263.

Services have been entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Lincoln.
