The Heartland Hawks athletics teams have for
the second year in a row set a new high point for academic
performance.
With a cumulative GPA of 3.03 for the 2019-2020 academic year,
Heartland’s student athletes have posted the highest marks in
the program’s history. This tops the previous mark of 3.02 Hawks
athletes posted in the 2018-2019 academic year.
The continued academic success of student athletes reflects the
College’s commitment to student success. This year Heartland
opened the Student Athlete Academic Support Center (SAASC),
administered by Rachel Cook, Director of Advisement and Mary
Frahm, Head Volleyball Coach and Coordinator of the SAASC.
“I am so impressed with this group of student-athletes,” said
Cook. “This semester was particularly hard on everyone and many
of them had never taken an online class. To face that adversity
and still end with the highest Athletics department GPA ever is
an amazing accomplishment.”
Twenty-nine athletes made the Academic All-Conference team with
two full-time semesters with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Fourteen athletes were named to the NJCAA All-Academic 1st Team
with a 4.0 GPA. The most NJCAA 1st Team members in school
history.
“This is a great example how cocurricular activities, and
specifically athletics, can build and display resilience,” said
Ryan Knox. “Many of these student athletes felt the
disappointment of having a promising season come to an early end
due to measures taken to contain the pandemic. I’m so proud of
our student athletes, who kept working hard in their classes and
reached these academic achievements.”
