Even in our current circumstances, we can all still be a part of Relay for Life of Logan County

As many know, the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to many of our local events this year, including the annual Relay for Life gathering that was scheduled to take place on June 20th. While cornovirus may have stopped us from celebrating our survivors it did not stop cancer from plaguing many, many men, women, and children in our community and in our country.

Relay for Life is a vital part of the bigger picture that is the work of the American Cancer Society. Dollars raised through our local fundraisers and events come back to our community to support those who are battling cancer. Those dollars are still needed, and even though we can’t gather together, we can still help, and we can still fundraise in a more conservative and safe manner.

A lot has changed for this year, and the guidelines provided below will assist us all in continuing our work to raise money and awareness.

The Springfield office of the American Cancer Society is currently closed. Mail being sent to the ACS in Springfield is being forwarded to the corporate offices in Atlanta, Georgia. One issue that has been encountered recently is that envelopes containing contributions to Relay for Life are being returned to sender because they are not addressed properly and the post office doesn’t know what to do with them.

So, first, if and when you mail your Relay for Life donations to the Springfield office, please do not put “Relay for Life” in the address.

Address those envelopes as follows:

American Cancer Society
675 E. Linton Ave.
Springfield, IL 62703

At the same time, in order to assure that the local Relay gets credit for the donation, please be sure to make checks out as follows:

"American Cancer Society/Relay for Life Logan County Illinois"
 

In addition to the complications with mailing in donations, there are other obstacles caused by the closing of the Springfield Office.

For those who have registered on the RFL Logan County website as survivors, the Springfield office is not available to share that information with local volunteers. Therefore, if you did register as a survivor online, we need to hear from you personally to assure that you are placed on our local list.

Survivors should contact Tonita Reifsteck at 217-855-1645.

The same is true with the luminaria that were requested online via the RFL website.

You will need to repeat your request directly to Bill Post by calling him at 217-732-7564.

Anyone can still join this 2020 vision for RFL in Logan County – and join us in helping to find a cure for this horrendous invasion to a healthy life. Donations made thru August 15 will count for 2020.

The RFL team is working to find a venue and date to celebrate and recognize our survivors and the efforts during this epidemic that has caused all ‘usual events’ to be cancelled. Nicole Lee, chair says all information will be shared as the decisions on date and event are able to be finalized – it may be early fall or later ----- time will tell and public will be notified.

Although not visible we can still keep our survivors and our mission in our participation and prayers.
