The public is invited to greet Richard M. Sumrall
who is retiring as Director of the Lincoln Public Library District.
Sumrall is the 6th Library Director since 1903. He has served in
this capacity for the past 29 years.
Sumrall was named Library Director in 1991. He came to Lincoln from
Mobile, Alabama where he served as the Assistant Archivist for the
City of Mobile. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the
University of South Alabama and a Masters in Library Science degree
from the University of Southern Mississippi. In addition to serving
the library he has been actively involved in many professional
organizations and community groups.
A free library was established in Lincoln in 1874. The Carnegie
Library Building was erected in 1902 thru the generosity of Andrew Carnegie,
Stephen A. Foley, and Isabel Nash. It was dedicated in 1903. The Library Annex
across the alley from the Carnegie building was opened in 1995. It houses adult
fiction and Youth Services. In 1991, the Lincoln Public Library became a Library
District.
