To the editor: The members of
the Cronin Brothers VFW Post 1756 have voted to endorse the
referendum on ballots next week to impose a half-cent sales tax with
all proceeds earmarked for needed repairs and improvements to the
Logan County Courthouse.
As with the local American Legion Post 263, VFW Post 1756 also
traces its roots to the Logan County Courthouse building. Before the
purchase of our Post home, VFW members met in the Grand Army of the
Republic room in the courthouse.
We recognize that our Courthouse is the hub of downtown Lincoln. We
are very lucky to have a building with such historical significance,
and architectural beauty as the Logan County Courthouse. A building
like ours, made from Cleveland sandstone and the rock faced surfaces
of classic and grand design, that has served Logan County so well
for 115 years still has a lot of life left in her that will enable
this building to continue to serve us for another 115 years if
preservation and maintenance are performed correctly.
It has been mentioned before and bears repeating; the memorial
plaques that hang on the main floor walls serve to preserve OUR
history, OUR sacrifice of family and friends who served a grateful
Nation. When I say OUR, I do not refer to just the Veterans. I refer
to YOU. Families who lost loved ones, friends who grieve for names
on the walls to this very day.

A memorial to show exactly how many service
members represented Logan County, Illinois when their country
called. Logan County is recognized as THE MOST VETERAN FRIENDLY
COUNTY in the State of Illinois. This is because of YOU. Our
citizens who have never wavered in patriotic support.
Our Courthouse has stood firm for us for 115 years and the
inevitable wear and tear is showing. We hate taxes just as much as
the next person but this is a tax we are behind because it has a
definite purpose and expiration date. This specific tax referendum
is modeled in such a way that the citizens of Logan County will not
be solely paying this tax and it WILL expire in 20 years. It is only
.50 cents on every $100 spent on tangible goods. It does not tax
food or drugs. If additional grant funds can be secured, there is a
possibility that this tax would end prior to the set expiration
date.
We appreciate everything the Courthouse has done to serve Logan
County and we endorse this tax that will bring back, restore and
make room for improvements that will take us into the next century
and beyond.
Respectfully,
Michelle K. Ramlow
