 The annual award will provide financial aid to
graduating LCHS seniors who demonstrate a desire to help victims of
child abuse and neglect. The scholarship honors the memory and
professional legacy of Lincoln native Debra (Debbie) Bree, who died
in August 2020 after a courageous two-year battle with colon cancer.
Bree was the daughter of Bill and Pat Bree of Lincoln. She attended
Chester-East Lincoln School and graduated from Lincoln Community
High School in 1992. She continued her education at Illinois State
University and earned her Juris Doctor from DePaul University
College of Law. In 2000, Bree joined the Kane County State’s
Attorney’s Office and in 2012 was named the executive director of
the Kane County Child Advocacy Center. She devoted her entire career
to protecting, defending and advocating for children and victims’
rights.
The Debra L. Bree Memorial Scholarship will be
awarded to a Lincoln Community High School graduating senior of high
moral character and in the upper one-half of the graduating class.

The recipient must demonstrate a strong desire to advocate for
children who have been neglected, mistreated and/or abused. The $1,000
scholarship shall be used toward tuition at a college or university that offers
programs related to law and law enforcement, counseling, social work,
psychology, etc. Applications for the scholarship will be available through the
Lincoln Community High School Foundation.
Tax-deductible donations to the scholarship fund can be mailed directly to the
LCHS Foundation located at 1000 Railer Way, Lincoln, IL 62656. Donations can
also be made via the mobile payment service Venmo at @Kara-Washam. Donors should
indicate that the donation is designated for the Debra L. Bree Memorial
Scholarship.
