The World Wide Communion celebration
will be observed by an ecumenical service on the
parking lot of St. John United Church of Christ on
corner of 8th and Maple Streets in Lincoln, on
Sunday, October 4, 2020.
World Wide Communion was begun by the Presbyterian
denomination in Pennsylvania in 1933 and adopted
into their practices in 1936. Given as a gift to the
larger ecumenical church it was a slow process until
World War II when every effort was made to hold the
world together. Uniting in communion symbolized the
effort to hold people and countries together – “we
are one in the spirit and in Gospel of Jesus
Christ”. Promoted by the World Council of Churches
in 1940 members of every Christian faith have
celebrated around the world, demonstrating that the
church founded on Jesus Christ peacefully shares
God-given goods in a world increasingly destabilized
by globalization and market economies based on
greed. St. John UCC Mission Ministry collects a
Neighbors In Need Offering for denominational
assistance wherever needed in the world at this
service annually.
Members of the parishes of First Presbyterian Church
and St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln will
gather in their lawn chairs or in their cars along
the curb for worship beginning at 10:00 a.m. The
service is open to the public and worshippers are
invited to dress in any international clothing style
– be it of their heritage or share a country after
having visited it.

Pastors Adam Quine and Laurie Hill will conduct the services.
Both churches will livestream the service as well. Music will be provided by the
Presbyterian Church – including a Cello selection by Chet Lord-Remmert. Pastor
Laurie Hill will be delivering the message: “Why Does Faith Matter In The
World”.
Worshippers are asked to park in the parking area alongside the
Fitness Court or in Central Elementary School or alongside the church. Bring
lawn chairs, your bulletin and wear a mask. A table with communion elements will
be on site. (Attendees can bring their own if preferred) Open Communion is
practiced at this service. (no one is turned away)
Those wishing to sit in their car and listen should park alongside the parking
lot on Maple Street diagonally (NOT parallel as usual) Some parking will be
allowed at the end of the parking lot off 8th Street.
In case of rain – a decision will be made no later than 9 a.m. and announced on
Facebook and emails. Service will be moved indoors at St. John UCC. Worshipper

admitted to sanctuary &/or balcony. Because First Presbyterian is only
