Sidelined since Sept. 23, Clevinger was not on
the Padres' roster for the wild-card series against the St.
Louis Cardinals. He left that final start against the Los
Angeles Angels after one inning with an elbow injury. Two days
later he received a cortisone injection.
The Padres had Clevinger throw a bullpen session Sunday
afternoon in Texas, adding further credence to the idea that he
could pitch in the National League Division Series, which starts
Tuesday against the Dodgers. One of four alternate-site division
series, the Dodgers and Padres will play in the Rangers' new
stadium this week in Arlington, Texas.
The Padres, also without right-hander Dinelson Lamet, beat St.
Louis by using eight pitchers in Game 1 of the wild-card series
and using nine in Games 2 and 3.
Lamet also has an outside shot at being added to the NLDS
roster.
"We owe them (and) we owe the medical staff (time)," Padres
manager Jayce Tingler said of his recovering pitchers Sunday. "I
feel confident it's going to be a last-minute decision on the
roster. Trying to keep everything in play, not ruling anything
out."
Clevinger had a 2.84 ERA in four starts with the Padres this
season. He was acquired from the Cleveland Indians before the
trade deadline after falling out of favor in the clubhouse due
to violations of the team's COVID-19 protocol.
