To ensure safety of all those involved, this year’s
fundraising race will commence virtually, which means registered
participants can run or walk the 5K distance wherever – and whenever
– they want throughout the month of October.
“We wanted to create an event that kept all of our participants safe
while still allowing them the opportunity to enjoy a run or walk on
a beautiful autumn day,” Executive Director of HCC Foundation, Chris
Downing explains. “With a virtual format, more people can
participate.”
Anyone anywhere is eligible to sign up to race. The money collected
from registration fees will help fund student support methods like
scholarships and innovative learning opportunities, which are
indispensable in current times.
“Events like the 5K help fund key programs, which aids in keeping
students enrolled and completing their degrees and certificates,”
Downing continues. “Many of our students are training to be nurses,
IT specialists, truck drivers, and teachers – all essential
professions to any community.”
Community members and HCC alumni can link to register
online through www.heartland.edu.

Newly named the Heartland “Haunted” Harvest 5K, this year’s event
introduces an extra element. Registered participants are encouraged to run/walk
in their Halloween attire, then submit a photo of themselves to the 5K’s
Facebook group to compete in the race’s costume contest. Finalists will be
selected and voted on for a chance to win prizes.
To encourage campus connection, HCC students can register and race for free.
“A college experience is much more than just what happens in the classroom,”
says Skylar Guimond, HCC Director, Student Engagement. “Even though most classes
are online this semester, we still want to give students that sense of ‘campus
life.’ Having activities and events like the Haunted Harvest 5K provides a safe
and healthy way for students to stay linked to campus and enjoy their time at
Heartland.”
Registration for the Heartland “Haunted” Harvest 5K is open now and will close
on October 31.
