Niskanen, who turns 34 in December, has tallied
356 points (72 goals, 284 assists) in 949 games over 13 seasons
with the Dallas Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals
and Flyers. He won a Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018.
"I want to thank Matt Niskanen for his contributions to our team
this season," Flyers president and general manager Chuck
Fletcher said in a statement posted on Twitter. "As an
organization and a team, we made great strides this year ... In
my opinion, Matt Niskanen did as much as anyone to change the
mindset of our team. He's a consummate professional."
Niskanen, who tallied 33 points (eight goals, 25 assists) in 68
games with the Flyers in 2019-20, will forfeit the $5.75 million
he is owed in 2020-21 by retiring.
He added one goal and one assist in 15 playoff games for
Philadelphia, which lost a seven-game series to the New York
Islanders in the second round. Niskanen's career totals in the
Stanley Cup playoffs include 42 points (six goals, 36 assists)
in 140 games.
Philadelphia acquired Niskanen in a June 2019 trade that sent
fellow defenseman Radko Gudas to Washington. Niskanen signed a
seven-year, $40.25 million deal with the Capitals in July 2014.
